BRICS Business Forum: PM Modi Calls for Lower Trade Barriers, Stronger Global Business Links

Prime Minister Narendra Modi highlights secure sea routes, resilient supply chains, startups and digital innovation as key pillars of India’s BRICS agenda.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Friday said India is working to make international commerce easier by lowering trade barriers and expanding avenues for businesses.

Speaking at the BRICS Business Forum in New Delhi, Modi’s remarks came against the backdrop of continuing turbulence in global trade, including tariff-related disruptions and the impact of the West Asia conflict on vital maritime routes.

Modi stressed that the smooth movement of goods depends heavily on the security of international shipping corridors.

He said open sea routes, uninterrupted supply lines and protection for seafarers are essential for global commerce, reaffirming India’s support for freedom of navigation and the safety of those working at sea.

The issue carries particular importance for India, which has a significant presence in the global merchant shipping workforce.

According to earlier statements from the Ministry of External Affairs cited in the context of the conflicts, at least 10 Indian seafarers have lost their lives in the West Asia conflict, while five others were killed in attacks involving ships in the Black Sea.

Against a backdrop of rising protectionism, Modi said India has sought to strengthen its economic relationships rather than retreat from global trade.

He pointed to free trade agreements with around 40 countries since 2014 as part of efforts to widen market access and sustain commercial links despite international headwinds.

He said the same philosophy is being applied to BRICS, with India seeking to make it easier for companies across member countries to find markets, investment and collaboration opportunities.

During India’s chairship, new cooperation networks have been developed in fields including agriculture, healthcare, skills and smart grids, he said.

Modi highlighted the BRICS Incubator Network, BRICS MSME Portal and BRICS Startup Innovation Fund as mechanisms designed to bring businesses, startups and small and medium enterprises closer to markets and sources of finance.

Addressing delegates from India and other BRICS countries at Bharat Mandapam, he urged businesses to use these platforms to expand investment and facilitate the movement of talent across member nations.

The Prime Minister also linked India’s economic strategy with the theme of its BRICS chairship — “Building for Resilience, Innovation, Cooperation and Sustainability.”

He said these four principles have guided India’s economic and trade policies over the past 12 years.

On resilience, Modi pointed to efforts to make supply chains less vulnerable by diversifying sources and strengthening reliability across critical areas, from energy to technology.

He said these measures have helped India maintain confidence in its growth prospects and economic stability despite uncertainty in the global economy. India’s economy expanded by 7.8 per cent in the first quarter of the year, he noted.

According to Modi, investment in infrastructure, entrepreneurship and innovation has been central to this economic progress.

He cited the expansion of roads, railways, ports and airports, alongside efforts to build capacity in strategically important sectors such as shipbuilding, semiconductors, quantum technology, critical minerals and biotechnology.

India’s startup ecosystem, he said, has become another important driver of innovation.

The country now has more than two lakh startups and over 120 unicorns. Indian startups are applying artificial intelligence in sectors such as education and healthcare while also developing technologies involving green hydrogen and batteries.

They are additionally expanding into areas including defence and space.

Modi said BRICS can provide a platform for taking such innovations beyond national borders and connecting them with international markets.

Greater collaboration among member countries, he suggested, could help turn successful domestic technologies into solutions with wider global applications.

India’s digital payments infrastructure was cited as another example of innovation at scale.

Modi highlighted the expansion of the Unified Payments Interface, or UPI, saying it has helped broaden financial inclusion and accelerate digital transactions across the country’s population of nearly 1.4 billion.

According to the Prime Minister, India’s digital payments ecosystem now accounts for about half of the world’s real-time payment transactions.

He said several countries are adopting elements of the Indian model, while innovators from BRICS nations can draw on India’s experience to develop payment and financial solutions suited to their own markets.

Modi also underlined the transformation of BRICS since its creation in 2006.

What began as a grouping of four countries has expanded into a wider network comprising 11 members and 10 partner nations, collectively representing about half of the global population, 40 per cent of world GDP and more than a quarter of international trade.

The current BRICS membership comprises Brazil, China, Egypt, Ethiopia, India, Indonesia, Iran, Russia, Saudi Arabia, South Africa and the United Arab Emirates.

The 10 partner countries are Belarus, Bolivia, Kazakhstan, Cuba, Malaysia, Nigeria, Thailand, Uganda, Uzbekistan and Vietnam.

Modi said the bloc’s economic expansion has also outpaced overall global growth.

While the world economy has increased by about two-and-a-half times since the grouping emerged, the combined GDP of BRICS countries has risen approximately four-and-a-half times, highlighting the bloc’s growing weight in the international economic order.

BRICS Business Forum:

प्रधानमंत्री ने भारत की BRICS अध्यक्षता की थीम—“Building for Resilience, Innovation, Cooperation and Sustainability”—को देश की आर्थिक नीति से भी जोड़ा।
