BRICS Summit 2026: PM Modi Calls for Urgent UN Reform, Unveils 10-Point Global Governance Roadmap
At the BRICS Summit in New Delhi, Prime Minister Narendra Modi pressed for long-pending reforms to the UN Security Council and highlighted the growing economic and strategic influence of BRICS nations.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Saturday called for an immediate overhaul of the United Nations Security Council, saying reforms to the global governance system can no longer be postponed.
Addressing the BRICS Summit in New Delhi, Modi also placed before BRICS nations a 10-point roadmap aimed at strengthening global governance and making international institutions more representative.
The call for UN reform came as BRICS leaders worked towards finalising a joint declaration.
The document is expected to voice opposition to unilateral wars without directly identifying any country.
Negotiators reportedly worked to reconcile differences between Iran and the United Arab Emirates, which occupy opposing positions in the Gulf conflict, before reaching an understanding on the declaration.
BRICS leaders are scheduled to formally consider and approve the joint declaration during the summit in Delhi at 4 pm.
The outcome is expected to underline the grouping’s position on major global political and security challenges while maintaining consensus among its members.
Chinese President Xi Jinping has also arrived in New Delhi for the summit. He is due to meet Prime Minister Modi bilaterally at 5.45 pm on Saturday on the sidelines of the BRICS gathering.
The meeting is being viewed as an important opportunity to inject fresh momentum into India-China relations and expand areas of cooperation within the BRICS framework. Xi’s visit marks his first trip to India in nearly seven years.
Speaking at the BRICS Business Forum, Modi highlighted the bloc’s expanding economic weight.
He said the combined GDP of BRICS countries has increased by almost four-and-a-half times, significantly outpacing the roughly two-and-a-half-fold growth recorded by the global economy over the comparable period.
Modi said BRICS countries now account for half of the world’s population, around 40 per cent of global GDP and more than a quarter of international trade.
He also underlined the grouping’s increasing role in innovation, saying its countries are developing solutions and opportunities ranging from community-level initiatives to advanced and frontier technologies.
India is hosting the 18th BRICS Summit at Bharat Mandapam in New Delhi on September 12 and 13.
Leaders of BRICS member and partner countries are attending the two-day meeting, where economic, geopolitical and international issues are being discussed.
As the BRICS chair for the year, India is expected to place particular emphasis on trade and investment, energy security, food security, and deeper cooperation among countries of the Global South.
The summit comes at a time when BRICS is seeking to expand its influence in discussions concerning the global economy and international governance.

नई दिल्ली में आयोजित BRICS शिखर सम्मेलन को संबोधित करते हुए उन्होंने वैश्विक शासन व्यवस्था को अधिक प्रभावी और प्रतिनिधित्वपूर्ण बनाने के लिए BRICS देशों के सामने 10 सूत्रीय रोडमैप भी रखा।
प्रधानमंत्री का यह आह्वान ऐसे समय आया है जब BRICS देश एक संयुक्त घोषणा पर सहमति बनाने की दिशा में आगे बढ़ रहे हैं।
रिपोर्टों के अनुसार, प्रस्तावित घोषणा में किसी देश का नाम लिए बिना एकतरफा युद्धों की निंदा किए जाने की संभावना है।
इस दस्तावेज को अंतिम रूप देने के दौरान ईरान और संयुक्त अरब अमीरात के बीच मतभेदों को पाटने की कोशिश की गई, क्योंकि दोनों देश खाड़ी क्षेत्र के संघर्ष में अलग-अलग पक्षों से जुड़े हुए हैं।
BRICS नेताओं द्वारा दिल्ली में शाम 4 बजे होने वाले सम्मेलन के दौरान संयुक्त घोषणा को औपचारिक रूप से मंजूरी दिए जाने की उम्मीद है।
इस घोषणा में अंतरराष्ट्रीय स्तर पर सामने आ रही राजनीतिक और सुरक्षा संबंधी चुनौतियों पर समूह का साझा रुख सामने आ सकता है।
इस बीच चीन के राष्ट्रपति शी जिनपिंग नई दिल्ली पहुंच चुके हैं। वह शनिवार शाम 5.45 बजे प्रधानमंत्री नरेंद्र मोदी के साथ द्विपक्षीय बैठक करेंगे।
यह मुलाकात BRICS शिखर सम्मेलन से इतर होगी और इसे भारत-चीन संबंधों में नई गति लाने तथा BRICS के माध्यम से सहयोग के नए क्षेत्रों को मजबूत करने के अवसर के तौर पर देखा जा रहा है। शी जिनपिंग करीब सात साल बाद भारत की यात्रा पर आए हैं।
BRICS बिजनेस फोरम को संबोधित करते हुए प्रधानमंत्री मोदी ने समूह की बढ़ती आर्थिक ताकत का भी उल्लेख किया।
उन्होंने कहा कि BRICS देशों की संयुक्त GDP में लगभग साढ़े चार गुना वृद्धि हुई है, जबकि इसी अवधि में वैश्विक GDP करीब ढाई गुना बढ़ी है।
मोदी ने कहा कि BRICS देश आज दुनिया की करीब 50 प्रतिशत आबादी, लगभग 40 प्रतिशत वैश्विक GDP और 25 प्रतिशत से अधिक विश्व व्यापार का प्रतिनिधित्व करते हैं।
उन्होंने यह भी कहा कि BRICS देश वैश्विक नवाचार और समाधान के महत्वपूर्ण केंद्र के रूप में उभर रहे हैं। इन देशों में जमीनी स्तर की पहलों से लेकर अत्याधुनिक और नई पीढ़ी की तकनीकों तक कई क्षेत्रों में नई संभावनाएं विकसित हो रही हैं।
भारत 12 और 13 सितंबर को नई दिल्ली स्थित भारत मंडपम में 18वें BRICS शिखर सम्मेलन की मेजबानी कर रहा है।
दो दिवसीय सम्मेलन में BRICS के सदस्य देशों के साथ-साथ साझेदार देशों के नेता भी हिस्सा ले रहे हैं। बैठक में वैश्विक अर्थव्यवस्था और भू-राजनीति से जुड़े महत्वपूर्ण मुद्दों पर चर्चा हो रही है।
इस वर्ष BRICS की अध्यक्षता भारत के पास है। ऐसे में शिखर सम्मेलन में व्यापार, निवेश, ऊर्जा और खाद्य सुरक्षा के साथ-साथ ग्लोबल साउथ के देशों के बीच सहयोग को बढ़ाने पर विशेष ध्यान दिए जाने की उम्मीद है।
सम्मेलन ऐसे दौर में हो रहा है जब BRICS वैश्विक आर्थिक व्यवस्था और अंतरराष्ट्रीय शासन से जुड़े विमर्श में अपनी भूमिका को और व्यापक बनाने की दिशा में आगे बढ़ रहा है।
