JP Nadda Meets Anti-Reservation Protesters, Government Faces Questions on Quota Policy
Union minister JP Nadda’s meeting with representatives of the Reservation Hatao Andolan has triggered demands for clarity on the Centre’s stand on caste-based reservation.
Opposition and political groups seek clarity on the government’s position after the BJP president held talks with leaders linked to the August 21 anti-reservation protest in Delhi.
New Delhi: A meeting between Union minister J P Nadda and representatives associated with an anti-reservation movement has sparked fresh political debate, with questions being raised about the Centre’s position on demands for changes to the existing caste-based quota system.
Nadda said on Thursday that he had held “cordial discussions” with members of a group linked to the Reservation Hatao Andolan, which had mobilised protesters in Delhi earlier this month.
He did not disclose the venue or provide details of the issues discussed.
The Union minister said the talks followed the August 21 protest at Jantar Mantar and named Harsh Dubey, Ran Bahadur Singh Chauhan and Mrityunjay Pathak as participants in the meeting.
He added that another round of discussions would be held soon.
The interaction has now prompted demands for a clear explanation of the government’s approach to the movement’s central demands.
CJP Seeks PM Modi’s Stand
The Cockroach Janta Party questioned why the government had not publicly explained its response to the anti-reservation campaign.
Party founder and convener Abhijeet Dipke asked what Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s position was on the movement and sought clarity on the issue of reviewing caste-based reservation.
In a post on X, Dipke questioned the government’s silence on the August 21 agitation, arguing that the public deserved to know the Prime Minister’s view on the matter.
The Aam Aadmi Party also reacted to Nadda’s meeting with the representatives.
Delhi unit president Saurabh Bharadwaj asked the government to explain its position on the demand for reconsidering the reservation system.
Protest Held in Delhi on August 21
The controversy stems from a protest organised under the banner of the Reservation Hatao Andolan, which had called for the removal of caste-based reservation and a greater emphasis on economic conditions.
The mobilisation was driven through an Instagram-based platform and drew people to the national capital on August 21.
Delhi Police had not permitted the gathering at Jantar Mantar and had instead allowed protesters to assemble at Ramlila Maidan.
However, several demonstrators gathered at Jantar Mantar, where police detained some participants and deployed a substantial security presence, including paramilitary personnel.
The protesters have argued that economic hardship should receive greater weight in determining eligibility for government support and reservation benefits.
Demands Go Beyond Scrapping Existing Quotas
The movement’s demands include a broader review of policies concerning Scheduled Castes, Scheduled Tribes and Other Backward Classes.
Protesters have also called for stronger exclusion mechanisms for financially better-off sections within reserved categories, including a possible creamy-layer framework.
Another demand focuses on expanding targeted assistance for economically disadvantaged students and families through scholarships, fee support, coaching facilities and other educational measures.
The movement has also sought changes to policies governing reservation in higher education and has raised concerns relating to the Scheduled Castes and Scheduled Tribes (Prevention of Atrocities) Act and the University Grants Commission framework.
While Nadda has confirmed that discussions with representatives of the movement have taken place, the government has not yet publicly outlined whether any of the demands are under consideration.
The planned follow-up meeting is expected to keep the issue in political focus.

जेपी नड्डा की आरक्षण विरोधी आंदोलन से बैठक, सरकार के रुख पर उठे सवाल
नई दिल्ली: आरक्षण हटाओ आंदोलन से जुड़े प्रतिनिधियों के साथ केंद्रीय मंत्री जेपी नड्डा की मुलाकात के बाद जाति आधारित आरक्षण व्यवस्था को लेकर केंद्र सरकार की नीति पर सवाल खड़े किए जा रहे हैं।
नड्डा ने गुरुवार को बताया कि उन्होंने आंदोलन से जुड़े कुछ प्रतिनिधियों के साथ सौहार्दपूर्ण बातचीत की है।
हालांकि उन्होंने बैठक में हुई चर्चा का विस्तृत ब्यौरा नहीं दिया और न ही यह बताया कि मुलाकात कहां हुई।
उनके अनुसार, 21 अगस्त को हुए प्रदर्शन के बाद पूर्व निर्धारित कार्यक्रम के तहत हर्ष दुबे, रण बहादुर सिंह चौहान और मृत्युंजय पाठक के साथ बातचीत हुई। नड्डा ने कहा कि इस विषय पर जल्द ही एक और बैठक की जाएगी।
बैठक की घोषणा के बाद कई राजनीतिक संगठनों ने सरकार से यह स्पष्ट करने की मांग की है कि आरक्षण नीति में बदलाव की मांग पर उसका आधिकारिक रुख क्या है।
CJP ने प्रधानमंत्री मोदी का रुख पूछा
कॉकरोच जनता पार्टी के संस्थापक और संयोजक अभिजीत डिपके ने केंद्र सरकार से सवाल किया कि 21 अगस्त के आंदोलन और उसकी प्रमुख मांगों पर प्रधानमंत्री नरेंद्र मोदी का क्या दृष्टिकोण है।
डिपके ने एक्स पर एक पोस्ट के जरिए पूछा कि नड्डा जिस आंदोलन के प्रतिनिधियों से बातचीत कर रहे हैं, उस आंदोलन पर प्रधानमंत्री की राय सार्वजनिक क्यों नहीं की जा रही है।
आम आदमी पार्टी ने भी इस मुलाकात पर प्रतिक्रिया दी। पार्टी की दिल्ली इकाई के अध्यक्ष सौरभ भारद्वाज ने आरक्षण व्यवस्था पर पुनर्विचार की मांग को लेकर केंद्र से अपनी स्थिति स्पष्ट करने को कहा।
जंतर-मंतर पर हुआ था प्रदर्शन
विवाद की पृष्ठभूमि 21 अगस्त के उस प्रदर्शन से जुड़ी है, जब कई लोग ‘आरक्षण हटाओ आंदोलन’ के आह्वान पर दिल्ली पहुंचे थे।
आंदोलन से जुड़े लोगों की मुख्य मांग जाति आधारित आरक्षण व्यवस्था को समाप्त करने और आर्थिक आधार को अधिक महत्व देने की रही है।
दिल्ली पुलिस ने प्रदर्शनकारियों को जंतर-मंतर के बजाय रामलीला मैदान में एकत्र होने की अनुमति दी थी।
इसके बावजूद कुछ लोग जंतर-मंतर पहुंचे, जहां कई प्रदर्शनकारियों को हिरासत में लिया गया। क्षेत्र में पुलिस और अर्धसैनिक बलों की तैनाती भी की गई थी।
यह आंदोलन मुख्य रूप से सोशल मीडिया के जरिए संगठित हुआ था और इसके लिए इंस्टाग्राम आधारित मंच का उपयोग किया गया।
आंदोलन की प्रमुख मांगें क्या हैं
प्रदर्शनकारियों का कहना है कि सरकारी सहायता और आरक्षण से जुड़े लाभ तय करने में जाति के बजाय आर्थिक स्थिति को प्राथमिक आधार बनाया जाना चाहिए।
आंदोलन से जुड़े लोगों ने आरक्षित वर्गों के भीतर आर्थिक रूप से संपन्न लोगों को बाहर रखने के लिए क्रीमी लेयर जैसी व्यवस्था को मजबूत करने या नए मानदंड लागू करने की मांग भी उठाई है।
आर्थिक रूप से कमजोर वर्गों के लिए छात्रवृत्ति, फीस में सहायता, कोचिंग और अन्य शैक्षणिक सहयोग को बढ़ाने की मांग भी आंदोलन के एजेंडे में शामिल है।
इसके अलावा, अनुसूचित जाति, अनुसूचित जनजाति और अन्य पिछड़ा वर्ग से संबंधित आरक्षण प्रावधानों की व्यापक समीक्षा की मांग की गई है।
उच्च शिक्षा में आरक्षण नीति, विश्वविद्यालय अनुदान आयोग के ढांचे और अनुसूचित जाति एवं अनुसूचित जनजाति अत्याचार निवारण अधिनियम से जुड़े मुद्दे भी आंदोलन के दौरान उठाए गए।
जेपी नड्डा ने फिलहाल केवल इतना कहा है कि प्रतिनिधियों के साथ बातचीत हुई है और आगे भी चर्चा होगी।
सरकार ने अब तक यह सार्वजनिक नहीं किया है कि आंदोलन की किसी मांग पर विचार किया जा रहा है या नहीं।
इसी वजह से आगामी बैठक और केंद्र के अगले रुख पर राजनीतिक और सार्वजनिक नजर बनी हुई है।
