CM Yogi Launches UP’s First Airshed Project, Calls for Collective Action Against Pollution
Marking World Environment Day, Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath unveiled several environmental initiatives and development projects aimed at improving air quality and promoting ecological conservation across the state.
The highlight of the event was the launch of Uttar Pradesh’s first Airshed-based pollution management project, an initiative valued at approximately ₹274 crore.
The project, introduced at the Indira Gandhi Pratishthan in Lucknow, is being implemented under the Uttar Pradesh Clean Air Management Programme.
Supported by the World Bank, the initiative seeks to tackle air pollution through a coordinated regional approach rather than limiting efforts to individual cities or districts.
During the event, the Chief Minister also inaugurated the “Ek Ped Maa Ke Naam” (A Tree in Mother’s Name) campaign and encouraged citizens to plant trees as a tribute to their mothers.
He further interacted virtually with people from different districts and honoured village heads from 100 gram panchayats for their contributions to environmental conservation and rural development.
A short documentary showcasing the achievements and ongoing work of the Uttar Pradesh Clean Air Management Programme was also screened.
The government announced an ambitious plantation target of 35 crore saplings under the “Ek Ped Maa Ke Naam” campaign for 2026, aiming to significantly increase the state’s green cover.
What Is the Airshed Project?
An airshed refers to a geographical region where air moves freely and pollutants spread across multiple districts or cities through atmospheric circulation.
Since air pollution does not remain confined within administrative boundaries, managing it effectively requires a broader regional strategy.
The Airshed Project is designed to identify pollution sources across the Ganga basin and surrounding areas, assess their environmental impact, and implement targeted mitigation measures.
The initiative focuses on reducing emissions from industries, transportation, construction activities, and other major contributors to air pollution.
Under the programme, pollution control efforts will cover approximately 39 districts in Uttar Pradesh.
Authorities plan to use scientific monitoring systems, data analysis, and coordinated policymaking to improve air quality and promote sustainable development.
CM Yogi Highlights Environmental Responsibility
Addressing the gathering, Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath emphasised that environmental protection is a shared responsibility.
He said the campaign to plant trees in honour of mothers combines emotional values with environmental stewardship and encourages citizens to contribute directly to a greener future.
The Chief Minister praised Prime Minister Narendra Modi for inspiring large-scale public participation in environmental initiatives.
He urged citizens, educational institutions, social organisations, and local bodies to actively support tree plantation drives and sustainability efforts.
According to Yogi Adityanath, Uttar Pradesh is committed to balancing development with environmental protection. He said the state would continue to work towards cleaner air, greener landscapes, and a healthier future for coming generations.
Recognition for Environmental Contributors
As part of the celebrations, village leaders, environmental workers, and local institutions were recognised for their efforts in promoting sustainability and implementing environmental programmes at the grassroots level.
Officials said community participation would remain central to the success of both the Airshed Project and the plantation campaign, with local stakeholders playing a key role in achieving long-term environmental goals.
