Bogota: A powerful earthquake struck Colombia early Monday, sending residents fleeing homes and offices across a wide swathe of the country and leaving at least 69 people dead, according to the figures provided in initial reports.
The strongest impact was reported in and around Choco province, while violent shaking was also felt in Bogota and several major cities.
The United States Geological Survey (USGS) and Colombia’s geological authorities recorded the earthquake at magnitude 7.4, while the Colombian Geological Service had initially placed the magnitude at 6.6.
The tremor occurred at 7:34 a.m. local time on August 10, with its epicentre near San Jose del Palmar in Choco, on Colombia’s Pacific coast.
The USGS located the epicentre about five kilometres east of San Jose del Palmar, roughly 400 kilometres west of Bogota.
Colombia’s federal disaster management agency, UNGRD, put the depth at around 79 kilometres or deeper.
The relatively deep origin of the earthquake did not prevent widespread shaking. Residents in Bogota rushed outside as emergency sirens sounded, with some reportedly leaving their homes still wearing night clothes.
Tremors were also felt beyond Colombia, including in neighbouring Ecuador and Panama and in the border region near Venezuela.
Pereira recorded 18 deaths, while two fatalities were reported from Manizales. Further casualties and damage reports were emerging from different parts of the country as authorities began assessing the impact.
Images and videos circulating on social media showed cracked buildings and people struggling to keep their footing during the shaking.
In Manizales, footage from the El Cable area, about 120 kilometres from San Jose del Palmar, showed people reacting as structures shook.
Local media also reported damage to residential and commercial buildings in several cities.
Reports of cracks emerged from Cali, Armenia, Pereira and Medellin, while the mayor of Cali, Colombia’s third-largest city, described the damage there as major.
Some televised footage showed buildings with sections of their facades torn away, highlighting the force of the tremor despite its considerable depth.
Authorities in Choco said the situation was particularly concerning in Quibdo, the provincial capital.
Governor Nubia Carolina Cordoba-Curi said injuries and substantial structural damage had been reported there even though the earthquake’s epicentre was near San Jose del Palmar.
“We are concerned about aftershocks,” Cordoba-Curi said, adding that authorities had begun assessing the damage and would release an initial official report.
Colombian President Abelardo de la Espriella said he would personally oversee recovery operations.
He also announced plans to establish an emergency coordination centre in San Jose del Palmar to direct the response.
The earthquake has renewed attention on seismic activity in the region following two powerful earthquakes that struck Venezuela in late June.
Those events were recorded at magnitudes of 7.2 and 7.5 and were reported to have destroyed hundreds of buildings and killed more than 5,000 people.
The Colombian earthquake originated considerably deeper than those Venezuelan events.
The depth of about 79 kilometres places it in the intermediate-depth category, whereas the June earthquakes in Venezuela were much shallower, occurring at depths of roughly 10 to 22 kilometres.
Emergency teams were continuing to assess buildings and casualties as reports arrived from different parts of Colombia.
Authorities were also preparing for possible aftershocks, while residents in affected areas remained alert following the powerful early-morning shaking.

बोगोटा: कोलंबिया में सोमवार सुबह आए शक्तिशाली भूकंप ने देश के बड़े हिस्से को हिला दिया। शुरुआती रिपोर्टों में कम से कम 69 लोगों की मौत की जानकारी सामने आई है।
राजधानी बोगोटा समेत कई शहरों में लोग घबराकर घरों और इमारतों से बाहर निकल आए, जबकि कई स्थानों पर भवनों को नुकसान पहुंचने की खबर है।

कोलंबिया की संघीय आपदा प्रबंधन एजेंसी UNGRD के अनुसार, भूकंप करीब 79 किलोमीटर या उससे अधिक गहराई में आया।
अपेक्षाकृत अधिक गहराई के बावजूद झटकों का असर देश के दूर-दराज के इलाकों तक महसूस किया गया।
बोगोटा में भूकंप के झटकों के दौरान आपातकालीन सायरन बजने लगे और लोग अपने घरों तथा इमारतों से निकलकर सड़कों पर पहुंच गए। कुछ लोगों के बारे में बताया गया कि वे रात के कपड़ों में ही बाहर आ गए थे।
भूकंप के झटके पड़ोसी इक्वाडोर और पनामा के अलावा वेनेजुएला से लगी सीमा के निकट के इलाकों में भी महसूस किए गए।
पेरिरा में 18 लोगों की मौत की सूचना है, जबकि मनीजालेस में दो लोगों के मारे जाने की खबर सामने आई। देश के विभिन्न हिस्सों से नुकसान और हताहतों की संख्या से जुड़ी सूचनाएं लगातार सामने आ रही थीं।

कोलंबिया के राष्ट्रपति अबेलार्दो दे ला एस्प्रिएला ने कहा कि वह राहत और पुनर्बहाली अभियान की व्यक्तिगत रूप से निगरानी करेंगे।
उन्होंने सैन जोस डेल पालमार में आपातकालीन समन्वय केंद्र स्थापित करने की भी बात कही, ताकि राहत कार्यों को प्रभावी ढंग से संचालित किया जा सके।
कोलंबिया में आया यह भूकंप ऐसे समय में आया है जब दक्षिण अमेरिकी क्षेत्र में हालिया भूकंपीय गतिविधियों ने चिंता बढ़ाई हुई है। जून के अंत में वेनेजुएला में लगातार दो शक्तिशाली भूकंप आए थे, जिनकी तीव्रता 7.2 और 7.5 दर्ज की गई थी।

कोलंबिया में आया भूकंप उन घटनाओं की तुलना में काफी अधिक गहराई पर था। करीब 79 किलोमीटर की गहराई के कारण इसे मध्यम गहराई वाला भूकंप माना जाता है, जबकि वेनेजुएला में जून के भूकंप केवल करीब 10 से 22 किलोमीटर की गहराई पर आए थे।
