Delhi Holi Murder Case: 20 Accused Chargesheeted in Brutal Killing of 26-Year-Old Tarun Butolia in Uttam Nagar
What began as a minor argument over a water balloon on Holi allegedly spiralled into a violent attack that claimed the life of 26-year-old Tarun Butolia in Delhi’s Uttam Nagar earlier this year.
According to the Delhi Police investigation, at least 10 of the 20 accused directly assaulted Tarun using iron rods, sticks, and cement blocks, while the remaining accused allegedly encouraged and provoked the attackers during the brutal assault.
Police recently filed a detailed 550-page chargesheet before a Delhi court in connection with the murder that took place on March 4, naming 20 accused persons, including two juveniles. Investigators said two of the accused are still absconding.
The probe has revealed that the incident was not a planned murder but allegedly erupted out of a sudden confrontation between two neighbouring families during Holi celebrations.
According to police findings, the dispute began when an 11-year-old relative of Tarun threw a water balloon from the second floor of her house.
The balloon reportedly struck a woman from a neighbouring family, leading to a heated argument between the two sides.
During the confrontation, the woman allegedly used derogatory and caste-based remarks against Tarun’s family. The verbal altercation soon escalated into a physical scuffle, police said.
Investigators claimed that several relatives of the accused then joined the confrontation and allegedly attacked members of Tarun’s family.
According to the chargesheet, tensions continued to simmer even after the initial clash. About 30 minutes later, Tarun was returning home after celebrating Holi with friends when he was allegedly surrounded by the accused group.
Police said at least 10 people physically assaulted him with rods, sticks,s and cement blocks, leaving him critically injured on the road.
After the attack, the accused allegedly fled the spot while Tarun was rushed to the hospital in critical condition. He succumbed to his injuries the following day.
The killing sent shockwaves through the area, with residents describing the violence as unusually brutal for what had started as a neighbourhood dispute during festive celebrations.
During the investigation, police arrested 16 accused persons and apprehended two juveniles.
According to officials, 17 of the 20 accused are related to one another, while the remaining three are close family friends.
Sources said the police have heavily relied on eyewitness testimonies while preparing the chargesheet. Several eyewitnesses have been made key prosecution witnesses in the case.
Investigators have also attached supporting evidence, including post-mortem findings, Call Detail Records (CDRs), and Internet Protocol Detail Records (IPDRs) to strengthen the prosecution’s case.
Police sources said forensic reports are still awaited and may later be submitted before the court through a supplementary chargesheet.
The accused have been booked under multiple serious charges, including murder, attempt to murder, rioting, unlawful assembly, and criminal conspiracy.
Relevant sections of the Scheduled Castes and Scheduled Tribes (Prevention of Atrocities) Act have also been invoked in the case.
During the course of the investigation, police additionally added charges related to criminal trespass after allegations surfaced that some of the accused attempted to forcibly enter Tarun’s house during the initial altercation.
Officials said proceedings against the adult accused will continue before the trial court, while the case involving the two minors will be heard separately by the Juvenile Justice Board.
Police said efforts are continuing to trace and arrest the remaining absconding accused.
