Donald Trump Says ‘Great Progress’ Made in Iran Talks as US Pushes for Nuclear Deal Framework
US President Donald Trump on Wednesday signalled a possible diplomatic breakthrough in the ongoing tensions between Washington and Tehran, saying that “great progress” had been achieved during recent negotiations with Iran.
Trump also announced the suspension of “Project Freedom,” an initiative reportedly designed to help guide commercial and military vessels safely through the strategically critical Strait of Hormuz amid escalating conflict in West Asia.
The development comes as the White House appears increasingly optimistic about securing a preliminary agreement with Iran aimed at reducing tensions and reopening broader discussions surrounding Tehran’s nuclear programme.
According to a report published by Axios, US officials are working toward finalising a one-page memorandum of understanding (MoU) that would establish a basic framework for more detailed and comprehensive negotiations between the two countries.
The proposed document is expected to lay the groundwork for future talks on Iran’s nuclear activities.
This issue has long remained the central obstacle in relations between Tehran and Washington and has repeatedly derailed previous diplomatic efforts.
Citing two American officials familiar with the discussions, the report said the United States expects Iran to respond to the key terms of the proposed MoU within the next 48 hours.
While officials stressed that no final agreement has yet been reached, sources indicated that the two sides are now closer to a diplomatic understanding than at any point since negotiations resumed following the outbreak of the West Asia conflict on February 28.
The apparent progress marks a potentially significant shift after months of heightened tensions, military escalation, and fears that the regional conflict could spiral further, particularly around the Strait of Hormuz — one of the world’s most vital oil shipping routes.
Any breakthrough in negotiations could have major geopolitical implications, not only for US-Iran relations but also for regional stability, global energy markets, and ongoing international concerns over Iran’s nuclear ambitions.
