Flood Disaster in Nepal Leaves Nine Dead, Sweeps Away Bridges and Disrupts 430 MW Power Capacity

Nepal Flood Disaster Kills 9, Bridges and Power Projects Damaged
A sudden surge in the Bhote Koshi river system triggered a major emergency in central Nepal, isolating communities and disrupting a historic Himalayan transport corridor.

Kathmandu: A major flood emergency unfolded across central Nepal on Wednesday after a powerful surge of water from the Tibetan plateau rushed into the country, leaving at least nine people dead and cutting off several communities.

The flooding centred on the Bhote Koshi river system and spread through parts of Rasuwa, Nuwakot and Dhading.

Rescue agencies were still receiving information from affected areas, with several people reported missing and authorities warning that the final scale of the disaster could become clearer only after access is restored.

The sudden flow tore through a Himalayan corridor that has served as an important connection between Nepal and Tibet for generations.

Settlements along the route suffered heavy damage as the river expanded beyond its usual course.

Infrastructure was among the worst-hit sectors. Multiple bridges on the Trishuli river system were washed away, severely disrupting transport.

At least six bridges were reported destroyed, creating fresh obstacles for movement through the region.

The impact has also been felt beyond the immediate disaster zone.

Damage around the Malekhu area has complicated travel towards Chitwan and Pokhara, two of Nepal’s most important tourism centres.

An established educational institution in the affected region was also caught in the devastation.

Tribhuvan Trishula High School, regarded as a major and long-standing school in the area, was reported to have suffered severe damage, with early accounts suggesting that parts of the institution may have been swept away.

The flood also struck Nepal’s electricity infrastructure.

Preliminary assessments indicated that power facilities with a combined generation capacity of about 430 MW had been affected, potentially adding pressure to the country’s energy network.

Police said the surge was believed to have followed a glacier-related event in Tibet, though officials were continuing to investigate the exact chain of events.

The water reportedly reached Nepal at around 9.15 am, rapidly transforming the river into a destructive force.

Information received from across the border later suggested that water levels were falling.

However, disaster authorities said this did not eliminate the possibility of another flood surge, and residents in vulnerable areas were urged to remain cautious.

As the crisis intensified, Prime Minister Balendra Shah convened an emergency Cabinet meeting to coordinate the government’s response.

The Nepal Army has taken charge of the main rescue operation, supported by other security agencies.

Teams are attempting to locate missing people and reach areas that have been cut off by damaged roads and collapsed bridges.

Authorities said a complete assessment of the losses would take time, particularly because access to several affected locations remains difficult.

The disaster has once again demonstrated the vulnerability of Himalayan communities to sudden changes in river systems.

In a matter of hours, the flooding disrupted homes, transport routes, schools and energy facilities across a strategically important part of Nepal.

With search and rescue operations continuing, the government’s immediate challenge is to prevent further casualties, reconnect isolated communities and determine whether conditions upstream could trigger another dangerous surge of water.
