New York: Social media platform X has suspended the account of the American Hindus for Engagement and Dialogue (AHEAD Forum) just days before the organisation is scheduled to host RSS chief Mohan Bhagwat at a major gathering in New York.
The programme, titled “Universal Oneness Celebration,” is scheduled for August 29 at the Infosys Theater inside Madison Square Garden.
Bhagwat is expected to address members of the Indian diaspora during the event, which AHEAD Forum has presented as a multicultural celebration linked to Raksha Bandhan and focused on harmony, unity and dialogue among communities.
Following the suspension, AHEAD Forum appealed to X to restore its account.
The platform has not publicly explained the action, and there is no publicly available evidence linking the suspension directly to the political controversy surrounding Bhagwat’s upcoming appearance.
According to the organisers, more than 200 Hindu-American organisations are backing the celebration.
AHEAD Forum has maintained that its communications on X promoted peaceful coexistence, mutual understanding and constructive engagement, and did not violate the platform’s stated rules.
The social media action has come at a politically sensitive moment.
The New York event has already triggered opposition from Mayor Zohran Mamdani, while groups critical of the RSS have announced demonstrations outside Madison Square Garden.
Mamdani, speaking after Bhagwat arrived in New York, said he did not support the gathering but questioned whether the city had any legal authority to stop a privately organised programme.
His remarks have further intensified debate over the event, which has become a flashpoint for wider disagreements concerning the RSS, Hindu nationalism and the political role of the Indian diaspora in the United States.
Bhagwat’s visit is part of an international outreach tour during the RSS centenary year.
The itinerary includes engagements in the United States, Canada and the United Kingdom.
Security has also emerged as a key issue ahead of the gathering.
The Hindu American Foundation has advised those planning to attend to remain alert and aware of their surroundings while avoiding confrontation.
The organisation has also urged the New York administration to ensure the safety and civil rights of all participants.
Meanwhile, Hindus for Human Rights has said it plans to stage protests near the venue. Critics of Bhagwat and the RSS have accused the organisation of pursuing an exclusionary Hindu nationalist ideology.
The RSS has strongly rejected such characterisations and has described the New York programme as an open and inclusive platform aimed at encouraging conversation and mutual respect.
The controversy has also drawn attention to criticism from the US Commission on International Religious Freedom, which has urged the US government to consider action against individuals it alleges are responsible for violations of religious freedom, including possible targeted sanctions.
Reports have also said the commission suggested examining whether Bhagwat’s US visa should be revoked.
India’s Ministry of External Affairs has dismissed the commission’s allegations, describing USCIRF as biased and lacking credibility.
Adding another voice to the debate, American singer and actress Mary Millben has publicly defended the New York gathering and criticised efforts to oppose it.
She has argued that some of the criticism reflects broader hostility towards Prime Minister Narendra Modi and the BJP.
With only days remaining before the August 29 event, the suspension of the organiser’s X account has added a new layer to an already contentious visit.
While the reason for the platform’s decision remains undisclosed, Bhagwat’s Madison Square Garden address is now at the centre of a broader political and ideological confrontation that extends far beyond the venue itself.

उन्होंने आयोजन के विरोधियों की आलोचना करते हुए कहा कि कार्यक्रम के खिलाफ कुछ प्रतिक्रियाओं के पीछे प्रधानमंत्री नरेंद्र मोदी और भाजपा के प्रति व्यापक राजनीतिक विरोध भी एक कारण है।
अब 29 अगस्त का कार्यक्रम केवल एक प्रवासी भारतीय सभा तक सीमित नहीं रह गया है।
