Four Doctors Brave Flames and Smoke to Rescue Newborns from Telangana Hospital Fire
Doctors, nurses and attendants rushed into the smoke-filled SNCU at Adilabad’s RIMS, pulling premature babies from incubators and life-support equipment
ADILABAD: Amid the panic and chaos that followed a devastating fire at the Special Newborn Care Unit of Telangana’s Rajiv Gandhi Institute of Medical Sciences, four doctors repeatedly entered the smoke-filled ward to bring critically ill newborns to safety.
The blaze broke out late Monday night at the government-run RIMS hospital in Adilabad after an air-conditioning unit reportedly malfunctioned or exploded.
Three infants eventually died, while hospital staff, parents and others scrambled to evacuate the babies from the affected unit. Officials have said the precise cause of the fire remains under investigation.
Among those who moved towards the danger rather than away from it were Dr Navneet Rathod, Dr Iftekar, Dr Shravanthi and Dr Dumpa Ashok. Their intervention helped remove a large number of newborns before firefighters arrived.
Rathod, an assistant professor of general medicine, was not originally assigned to the neonatal unit that night.
He happened to be on the same floor for a consultation when he noticed smoke and sparks coming from an air-conditioner.
Realising that the newborn ward was in immediate danger, he rushed towards it.
Inside, he found premature babies still connected to incubators, ventilators and other medical equipment.
The rescue therefore involved more than simply carrying the infants out.
The doctors first had to disconnect the babies from the equipment and move them quickly through the increasingly hazardous environment.
Rathod managed to bring out several babies during his initial efforts.
Dr Iftekar, a house surgeon, then entered the ward and helped remove more infants.
But the conditions rapidly became more dangerous.
During a subsequent attempt, Iftekar inhaled heavy smoke and collapsed inside the unit. Hospital attendants managed to reach him and pull him out.
Dr Shravanthi, who was responsible for the SNCU, also joined the evacuation. She went towards the incubators and carried babies out as the fire spread through the ward.
The danger intensified when the air-conditioning unit reportedly burst, sending debris onto the floor.
Flames and thick smoke made movement increasingly difficult, yet hospital staff and attendants continued entering the ward to locate babies who had not yet been evacuated.
For Dr Ashok, the final rescue attempt was prompted by the cries of anxious parents.
Having previously worked in the unit, he knew the layout and understood where the remaining infants were being kept.
He entered despite the worsening conditions and emerged carrying two babies.
Those two infants were among the last newborns brought out alive from the SNCU, according to the doctors’ accounts.
By then, visibility inside the unit had deteriorated dramatically.
Dense smoke had spread across the premises, making it extremely difficult even for rescuers to identify where they were going.
Familiarity with the ward’s layout became crucial in locating the remaining babies.
The rescued infants were subsequently transferred to nearby private hospitals for emergency care.
Early reports said several babies suffered breathing difficulties after exposure to smoke, while the rescued newborns were distributed among medical facilities for continued treatment.
The fire has left three families grieving while also highlighting the extraordinary efforts of hospital personnel who remained inside a rapidly deteriorating ward to evacuate vulnerable newborns.
For the four doctors involved, the operation was an emergency measured not in minutes but in seconds. Every delay meant greater danger for babies who were unable to escape on their own.
Rathod later recalled the night as an experience he was unlikely to forget, after witnessing both the devastation caused by the fire and the desperate race to get the newborns out alive.

आदिलाबाद: तेलंगाना के आदिलाबाद स्थित राजीव गांधी इंस्टीट्यूट ऑफ मेडिकल साइंसेज (RIMS) के नवजात शिशु देखभाल केंद्र में सोमवार देर रात लगी भीषण आग के बीच चार डॉक्टरों ने अपनी जान की परवाह किए बिना बचाव अभियान में अहम भूमिका निभाई।
उन्होंने धुएं से घिरे वार्ड में बार-बार प्रवेश कर कई नवजातों को बाहर निकाला।
सरकारी अस्पताल के स्पेशल न्यूबॉर्न केयर यूनिट (SNCU) में लगी आग के बाद अफरा-तफरी मच गई। शुरुआती जानकारी के अनुसार, आग एयर-कंडीशनिंग यूनिट में खराबी या विस्फोट के बाद भड़की।
हादसे में तीन नवजातों की मौत हो गई, जबकि अस्पताल के कर्मचारियों, परिजनों और अन्य लोगों ने बाकी बच्चों को बाहर निकालने के लिए तत्काल प्रयास शुरू कर दिए। आग लगने के वास्तविक कारण की जांच जारी है।
बचाव अभियान में डॉ. नवनीत राठौड़, डॉ. इफ्तेकर, डॉ. श्रावंती और डॉ. डम्पा अशोक ने महत्वपूर्ण भूमिका निभाई। दमकलकर्मियों के पहुंचने से पहले ही डॉक्टरों और अस्पताल के अन्य कर्मचारियों ने बड़ी संख्या में बच्चों को जलते हुए वार्ड से निकालना शुरू कर दिया था।
डॉ. राठौड़ उस रात SNCU में ड्यूटी पर नहीं थे। वह किसी अन्य मरीज के परामर्श के सिलसिले में उसी मंजिल पर पहुंचे थे। इसी दौरान उन्होंने एयर-कंडीशनर की ओर से धुआं और चिंगारियां निकलती देखीं। खतरे का अंदाजा होते ही वह नवजात वार्ड की ओर दौड़ पड़े।
अंदर पहुंचने पर उन्हें पता चला कि कई बच्चे समय से पहले जन्मे थे और इनक्यूबेटर, वेंटिलेटर तथा अन्य जीवनरक्षक उपकरणों से जुड़े हुए थे। ऐसे में उन्हें सीधे उठाकर बाहर ले जाना संभव नहीं था।
डॉक्टरों को पहले बच्चों को चिकित्सा उपकरणों से सुरक्षित तरीके से अलग करना पड़ा और फिर उन्हें धुएं से भरे वार्ड से बाहर निकालना पड़ा।
राठौड़ ने कई बच्चों को बाहर निकाला। इसके बाद हाउस सर्जन डॉ. इफ्तेकर भी बचाव अभियान में शामिल हो गए।
उन्होंने भी कई नवजातों को उपकरणों से अलग कर सुरक्षित स्थान तक पहुंचाया।
हालांकि दूसरी बार वार्ड में प्रवेश करने के दौरान जहरीला धुआं अंदर चले जाने से वह बेहोश होकर गिर पड़े। वहां मौजूद कर्मचारियों ने उन्हें बाहर खींचकर निकाला।
SNCU की प्रभारी डॉ. श्रावंती ने भी बचाव अभियान में हिस्सा लिया। उन्होंने इनक्यूबेटरों तक पहुंचकर वहां मौजूद बच्चों को बाहर निकालने में मदद की, जबकि आग और धुआं लगातार फैल रहा था।
इसी दौरान एयर-कंडीशनिंग यूनिट के फटने से स्थिति और गंभीर हो गई।
प्रत्यक्षदर्शियों के अनुसार, उसके कुछ हिस्से नीचे आ गिरे और वार्ड में आग फैल गई। इसके बावजूद अस्पताल के कर्मचारी और अन्य लोग लगातार अंदर-बाहर होते रहे और अधिक से अधिक बच्चों को बचाने का प्रयास करते रहे।
डॉ. डम्पा अशोक का अंतिम बचाव प्रयास बच्चों के माता-पिता की चीख-पुकार सुनने के बाद शुरू हुआ।
वह पहले इस यूनिट में काम कर चुके थे और उन्हें वार्ड की बनावट तथा बच्चों के रखे जाने की जगहों की जानकारी थी। उन्होंने धुएं के बीच अंदर जाकर दो नवजातों को खोजा और उन्हें सुरक्षित बाहर ले आए।
डॉक्टरों के अनुसार, ये दोनों बच्चे SNCU से जीवित बाहर निकाले जाने वाले अंतिम नवजातों में शामिल थे।
उस समय तक पूरा वार्ड घने धुएं से भर चुका था और अंदर देख पाना लगभग असंभव हो गया था। ऐसी स्थिति में वार्ड की जानकारी रखने वाले लोगों की भूमिका बेहद महत्वपूर्ण हो गई, क्योंकि उन्हें अंदाजा था कि नवजातों को किस स्थान पर रखा गया था।
बचाए गए बच्चों को तत्काल उपचार के लिए आसपास के निजी अस्पतालों में भेजा गया। आग और धुएं के संपर्क में आने के कारण कुछ बच्चों को सांस लेने में परेशानी हुई और उन्हें चिकित्सकीय निगरानी में रखा गया।
इस हादसे में तीन नवजातों की मौत ने कई परिवारों को गहरे सदमे में डाल दिया। वहीं, आग के बीच अस्पताल के डॉक्टरों और कर्मचारियों द्वारा बच्चों को बचाने के लिए किए गए प्रयास ने यह भी दिखाया कि आपात स्थिति में उन्होंने किस तरह अपनी सुरक्षा को पीछे रखते हुए मरीजों को प्राथमिकता दी।
चारों डॉक्टरों के लिए वह रात एक ऐसे बचाव अभियान में बदल गई जिसमें हर पल महत्वपूर्ण था। जिन बच्चों को खुद बाहर निकलने की क्षमता नहीं थी, उन्हें एक-एक करके धुएं और आग से निकालना पड़ा।
डॉ. राठौड़ के लिए यह रात अस्पताल में बिताई गई सामान्य ड्यूटी से बिल्कुल अलग थी। आग की भयावहता और नवजातों को बचाने के लिए चलाए गए उस संघर्ष की याद उनके लिए लंबे समय तक बनी रहने वाली है।
