Himanta Biswa Sarma Set for Second Term as Assam CM After BJP-Led NDA’s Massive Election Victory
Himanta Biswa Sarma was unanimously chosen as the leader of the BJP legislative party in Assam on Sunday, paving the way for him to begin a second straight term as the state’s chief minister.
Sarma is expected to meet the governor later in the day to formally stake a claim to form the next government after the BJP-led alliance secured a commanding mandate in the recently concluded assembly elections.
The election results delivered a resounding victory for the Bharatiya Janata Party and its allies in the northeastern state.
The BJP alone won 82 seats, its best-ever performance in Assam, while the broader National Democratic Alliance crossed the 100-seat mark with an impressive tally of 102 seats in the 126-member Assembly.
Alliance partners Asom Gana Parishad and Bodoland People’s Front contributed 10 seats each, strengthening the NDA’s dominant position in the state.
This marks the third consecutive electoral triumph for the NDA in Assam and underlines the growing political influence of Himanta Biswa Sarma, who has emerged as one of the BJP’s most prominent faces in the Northeast.
Political observers believe the scale of the victory reflects not just organisational strength but also Sarma’s personal popularity and political outreach across different communities in Assam.
The NDA performed exceptionally strongly in constituencies dominated by ethnic Assamese communities, tribal groups, and Bengali-Hindu voters.
Out of these seats, the Opposition managed to win only two — one secured by the Indian National Congress and another by its ally,t the RJD
The results have reinforced Sarma’s image as the central political force driving the BJP’s expansion in Assam.
The BJP’s journey in Assam over the last decade has shown steady consolidation.
In both the 2016 and 2021 Assembly elections, the party had won 60 seats on its own and formed governments with the support of regional allies.
In 2016, the BJP joined hands with the AGP and the BPF to form the government with a combined strength of 86 seats.
Five years later, in 2021, the party retained power with support from the AGP and the United People’s Party Liberal, securing a coalition tally of 75 seats.
This time, however, the BJP-led alliance has achieved an even more emphatic mandate, reflecting a major expansion of its political base across the state.
For supporters of the BJP, the victory is being seen as an endorsement of the government’s governance model, development agenda, and handling of regional issues.
For the Opposition, meanwhile, the scale of the defeat raises serious questions about its ability to challenge the BJP’s growing dominance in Assam.
As Himanta Biswa Sarma prepares to take oath once again, Assam is set to enter another political chapter under a leader who has become one of the BJP’s most influential strategists and administrators in the Northeast.
