Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Saturday urged graduating students of the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Delhi to view their careers as part of India’s larger journey towards becoming a developed nation, saying the coming decades would bring both opportunities and responsibilities for the country’s youth.
Addressing the institute’s 57th convocation, Modi drew a comparison between the challenges faced by earlier generations and those confronting young Indians today.
He said the freedom struggle had been driven by the goal of ending colonial rule, while the present generation had a different national task: contributing to the creation of a developed India.
“What you do in the next 25-30 years will contribute to Viksit Bharat,” the Prime Minister told the graduates, urging them to consider how their professional choices could serve the country.
He said India’s efforts towards self-reliance were creating a strong foundation for a developed economy and called upon the graduating students to build on that foundation.
Technology opening new avenues for youth
Modi said rapid technological change was reshaping the global balance of power and creating new fields of opportunity for young Indians.
He cited space technology, semiconductor manufacturing, drones, artificial intelligence, data centres, critical minerals, quantum computing, electric mobility and energy storage among the sectors expected to play an increasingly important role in the country’s future.
The Prime Minister highlighted India’s progress in semiconductor manufacturing, recalling that questions had been raised over whether the country could establish domestic chip production.
He said semiconductor manufacturing had now begun in India and expressed confidence that Indian capabilities would eventually extend “from chips to ships”.
During his visit, Modi also inaugurated Param Pragya, an AI-powered high-performance computing facility at IIT Delhi’s Sonepat campus.
‘In the examination of life, everything is out of syllabus’
Encouraging the graduates to approach their professional lives with an open mind, Modi said the structured nature of IIT examinations was very different from the uncertainties they would encounter outside the institution.
While students know the syllabus before taking an academic examination, he said, life offers no such certainty.
He urged them to challenge established assumptions, maintain curiosity and develop the confidence to seek unconventional solutions.
“Those who learn, win,” Modi said, stressing the importance of continuous learning as technology and professional environments evolve.
He also identified research as a major area where young Indians could contribute to national development.
Referring to initiatives including the Prime Minister’s Research Fellowship, the Research, Development and Innovation Scheme and the Anusandhan National Research Foundation, he encouraged students to strengthen India’s research ecosystem through sustained scientific work.
‘Life is not a leaderboard’
Towards the end of his address, Modi cautioned graduates against judging their professional progress by comparing themselves with friends and peers, particularly through social media.
“Life is not a leaderboard. Your real race is not with someone else; it is with yourself,” he said.
The Prime Minister encouraged the graduates to concentrate on personal growth, continue acquiring knowledge and retain their curiosity as they embark on their careers.
More than 3,000 students received degrees at the convocation, including 587 PhD scholars.

प्रधानमंत्री नरेंद्र मोदी ने शनिवार को भारतीय प्रौद्योगिकी संस्थान (IIT) दिल्ली के 57वें दीक्षांत समारोह में स्नातक छात्रों से अपने करियर को भारत के विकसित राष्ट्र बनने की व्यापक यात्रा से जोड़ने का आह्वान किया।
उन्होंने कहा कि आने वाले 25 से 30 वर्ष देश के युवाओं के लिए अवसरों के साथ-साथ राष्ट्रीय जिम्मेदारियों का भी दौर होंगे।
मोदी ने पिछली पीढ़ियों के संघर्ष और आज के युवाओं के सामने मौजूद चुनौतियों के बीच अंतर बताते हुए कहा कि स्वतंत्रता संग्राम की पीढ़ी के सामने देश को गुलामी से मुक्त कराने का लक्ष्य था।
वर्तमान पीढ़ी की जिम्मेदारी अलग है और उसे विकसित भारत के निर्माण में अपनी भूमिका निभानी है।
प्रधानमंत्री ने छात्रों से कहा कि अगले 25-30 वर्षों में वे जो भी काम करेंगे, उसका योगदान ‘विकसित भारत’ के निर्माण में होगा।
उन्होंने युवाओं से यह सवाल स्वयं से पूछने को कहा कि उनके काम से राष्ट्र को किस तरह लाभ पहुंच सकता है।
उन्होंने कहा कि आत्मनिर्भरता की दिशा में भारत की कोशिशें विकसित भारत की मजबूत नींव तैयार कर रही हैं और अब युवाओं को इसी आधार पर एक भव्य विकसित भारत का निर्माण करना है।
तकनीकी बदलाव से युवाओं के लिए नए अवसर
प्रधानमंत्री ने कहा कि दुनिया तेजी से बदल रही है और तकनीकी विकास वैश्विक शक्ति संतुलन को प्रभावित करने वाली प्रमुख ताकत बन गया है।
उन्होंने अंतरिक्ष तकनीक, सेमीकंडक्टर, ड्रोन, आर्टिफिशियल इंटेलिजेंस, डेटा सेंटर, महत्वपूर्ण खनिज, क्वांटम कंप्यूटिंग, इलेक्ट्रिक मोबिलिटी और ऊर्जा भंडारण जैसे क्षेत्रों में भारतीय युवाओं के लिए उभरते अवसरों का उल्लेख किया।
सेमीकंडक्टर उद्योग का उदाहरण देते हुए मोदी ने कहा कि जब भारत में घरेलू चिप निर्माण की दिशा में कदम उठाए जा रहे थे, तब कुछ लोगों ने देश की क्षमता पर सवाल उठाए थे।
अब भारत में पहली सेमीकंडक्टर इकाई में उत्पादन शुरू हो चुका है।
प्रधानमंत्री ने विश्वास जताया कि आने वाले समय में भारत “चिप से लेकर जहाज तक” निर्माण की क्षमता विकसित करेगा।
अपने दौरे के दौरान मोदी ने IIT दिल्ली के सोनीपत परिसर में आर्टिफिशियल इंटेलिजेंस आधारित हाई-परफॉर्मेंस सुपरकंप्यूटिंग सुविधा परम प्रज्ञा का भी उद्घाटन किया।
‘जीवन की परीक्षा में सब कुछ आउट ऑफ सिलेबस’
छात्रों को भविष्य की चुनौतियों के लिए तैयार रहने की सलाह देते हुए मोदी ने कहा कि IIT में पढ़ाई के दौरान होने वाली परीक्षाओं का पाठ्यक्रम पहले से निर्धारित होता है, लेकिन जीवन की परीक्षा में ऐसा कोई तय सिलेबस नहीं होता।
उन्होंने छात्रों से स्थापित धारणाओं पर सवाल उठाने, जिज्ञासा बनाए रखने और नई समस्याओं के नए समाधान तलाशने का साहस रखने को कहा।
प्रधानमंत्री ने लगातार सीखते रहने की आवश्यकता पर जोर देते हुए कहा कि जो व्यक्ति सीखता रहता है, वही आगे बढ़ता है।
उन्होंने शोध को भी भारत के भविष्य के लिए महत्वपूर्ण क्षेत्र बताया।
मोदी ने प्रधानमंत्री रिसर्च फेलोशिप, रिसर्च, डेवलपमेंट एंड इनोवेशन स्कीम और अनुसंधान नेशनल रिसर्च फाउंडेशन जैसी पहलों का उल्लेख करते हुए युवा शोधकर्ताओं से देश के अनुसंधान तंत्र को मजबूत करने में योगदान देने की अपील की।
‘जिंदगी कोई लीडरबोर्ड नहीं’
अपने संबोधन के अंत में प्रधानमंत्री ने छात्रों को सोशल मीडिया और दूसरे माध्यमों पर अपने करियर की तुलना दूसरों से करने से बचने की सलाह दी।
उन्होंने कहा, “जिंदगी कोई लीडरबोर्ड नहीं है। आपकी असली दौड़ किसी और से नहीं, बल्कि खुद से है।”
मोदी ने छात्रों से अपने व्यक्तिगत विकास पर ध्यान केंद्रित करने, लगातार नया सीखने और पेशेवर जीवन की शुरुआत के साथ अपनी जिज्ञासा को जीवित रखने का आग्रह किया।
दीक्षांत समारोह में 3,000 से अधिक छात्रों को डिग्रियां प्रदान की गईं। इनमें 587 पीएचडी शोधार्थी शामिल थे।
