Indian-Origin Delta Pilot Killed in Atlanta Helicopter Crash Hours After Wedding, Bride Survives

A joyful wedding celebration ended in heartbreak when an Indian-origin man lost his life in a helicopter crash in Georgia, United States, just hours after exchanging vows.

The tragic accident occurred near Atlanta on Friday night, according to local media reports.

The victim, Dave Fiji, was travelling with his newlywed wife, Jesni, aboard a Robinson R66 helicopter when it crashed near their wedding venue in Dawsonville.

The helicopter’s pilot also died in the accident. Jesni survived the crash and is currently recovering at a hospital in the Atlanta metropolitan area.

Dave was not only the groom but also an experienced aviator who worked as a pilot for Delta Air Lines, making the tragedy even more shocking for family members and colleagues.

Earlier that day, Dave and Jesni had celebrated their marriage at The Revere in Dawsonville.

The lavish ceremony was attended by nearly 400 relatives and friends who gathered to witness the couple begin their new journey together.

Recalling the happy moments before the tragedy, Dave’s father, George, said he stood proudly watching his son during the wedding ceremony.

He remembered how handsome and happy Dave looked as he celebrated one of the most important days of his life.

As the festivities came to an end, the newlyweds boarded a helicopter scheduled to fly them to DeKalb-Peachtree Airport.

The flight had been arranged as a memorable farewell gesture before the couple spent their first night together at a hotel in downtown Atlanta.

Sadly, the aircraft never arrived at its destination.

Witnesses later reported that the helicopter crashed into a vast forested area spanning roughly 10,000 acres.

The land is owned by the City of Atlanta and managed by the State of Georgia as a protected wildlife conservation zone.

Jesni remained trapped inside the wreckage for nearly six hours before emergency responders were able to reach and rescue her. According to George, when she regained consciousness, she found Dave lying against her chest.

Seeing blood on him and feeling that his body had already gone cold, she immediately realised that he had not survived. Being a nurse herself, she understood the devastating reality.

Despite the severity of the crash, Jesni escaped with cuts, bruises and minor injuries. Remarkably, she did not suffer any broken bones, George said.

Family members revealed that severe weather conditions had concerned Dave even before takeoff. Heavy rain fell across the area on the night of the wedding, and, as an airline first officer, he reportedly expressed doubts about flying in such poor visibility.

According to his father, Dave told the pilot that visibility was virtually nonexistent—conditions under which commercial flights would normally not operate.

Based on Jesni’s recollection of the moments before the accident, George said the pilot reassured Dave that the helicopter would climb to a higher altitude during the journey.

The cause of the crash remains under investigation.

Authorities from the National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) have launched an inquiry, though no official conclusions have yet been announced regarding what caused the helicopter to go down.

Reflecting on the sudden loss of his son, George spoke about the emotional roller coaster the family experienced.

What began as a day filled with celebration and happiness turned into unimaginable grief within a matter of hours.

He said his faith in God has helped the family cope with the tragedy, adding that while many questions remain unanswered, they are seeking comfort and strength through their beliefs.
