Iran Thanks India for Daring Rescue of 20 Crew Members from Somali Pirates in Arabian Sea
NEW DELHI: Iran has expressed its appreciation to India for the successful rescue of 20 crew members of its fishing vessel Azini, which had fallen into the hands of Somali pirates in the Arabian Sea.
Tehran described the Indian operation as an outstanding example of humanitarian cooperation and the longstanding friendship between the two countries.
The Iranian Embassy in New Delhi issued a statement thanking the Indian government, Navy and Air Force for their role in securing the release of the vessel and its crew.
It praised the courage, professionalism and coordination displayed by the Indian military personnel, saying the mission demonstrated India’s willingness to extend humanitarian assistance beyond its national boundaries.
The embassy said the operation had reinforced the spirit of friendship and mutual support between India and Iran.
It also commended India’s contribution to humanitarian assistance and disaster relief efforts.
The rescue mission followed the hijacking of Azini on October 29 in waters off northeastern Somalia, between Bandar Bayla and Hafun.
The incident raised serious maritime security concerns, as the pirates could potentially have converted the fishing vessel into a mother ship to launch attacks against commercial shipping in the surrounding waters.
India responded by deploying a naval warship already operating in the region, while a maritime reconnaissance aircraft was assigned to support the mission.
The two platforms worked together to locate the hijacked vessel, monitor its movements and restrict its ability to escape.
According to the Indian Navy, sustained surveillance and carefully calibrated non-lethal measures helped bring the situation under control.
The operation was subsequently carried out with the involvement of marine commandos, whose strength was reinforced through a precision airdrop conducted by an Indian Air Force C-17 transport aircraft.
Photographs released by the Defence Ministry showed the participation of INS Kolkata, an Indian Navy stealth destroyer, in the mission. All 20 crew members were brought to safety, with no reports of fatalities or injuries.
Defence Minister Rajnath Singh congratulated the armed forces, describing the mission as an example of meticulous planning and effective coordination between the services.
He said the Navy’s ability to quickly identify, intercept and secure the release of the vessel and its crew, despite the presence of heavily armed pirates, reflected its operational preparedness. He also acknowledged the timely assistance provided by the Air Force.
Singh said the operation reaffirmed India’s determination to protect human lives, counter maritime threats and maintain peace and stability throughout the Indian Ocean region.
The successful mission comes amid growing concerns about renewed pirate activity off Somalia and in the western Indian Ocean.
Commercial vessels operating along important international shipping routes continue to face security risks from piracy.
India has maintained a sustained anti-piracy naval presence in the Gulf of Aden since October 23, 2008.
At least one Indian warship has remained on round-the-clock patrol in the region as part of efforts to safeguard maritime commerce, reassure merchant shipping operators and discourage pirate attacks.
The rescue of the Iranian crew has once again highlighted India’s expanding role in maritime security operations and its readiness to respond to emergencies far beyond its territorial waters.
