Lucknow Student Protest: Aspirants Demand Fair Exams, Transparency and Action Against Recruitment Irregularities
The frustration of thousands of young job aspirants found a powerful voice at Lucknow’s Eco Garden on Friday, where students from across Uttar Pradesh gathered to protest alleged irregularities in competitive examinations and recruitment processes.
Among the demonstrators was a Class X student who stood amid the crowd, raising slogans and expressing concerns about the future of students across the country.
Speaking passionately, the teenager said she had joined the protest in the hope that when her own time comes to appear for competitive examinations, she would not have to worry about question papers being leaked.
She remarked that it was deeply disappointing for young people to witness repeated controversies surrounding examinations instead of a transparent and trustworthy system.
Standing nearby was Prashant Rana, who had travelled from Badaun to participate in the gathering.
He said students wanted policymakers to focus on issues that directly affect their lives, particularly employment and education, rather than diverting attention to religious matters.
According to him, young people expect meaningful discussions on opportunities, recruitment and their prospects.
The atmosphere at Eco Garden resonated with similar sentiments as hundreds of students and government job aspirants assembled to voice their concerns.
Protesters raised demands for accountability and reforms, alleging discrepancies in several recruitment examinations conducted in the state.
The gathering drew candidates preparing for a wide range of government services, including teaching, medical, revenue and administrative posts.
Many participants said they had learned about the protest through social media platforms and travelled long distances to attend.
Later in the day, the demonstration received support from Cockroach Janta Party (CJP) founder Abhijeet Dipke, who joined the protesters at the venue.
Addressing the crowd, Dipke assured participants that the movement would continue with determination.
He declared that if circumstances required imprisonment as part of the struggle, he would be prepared to face it first, while urging students not to retreat from their demands.
Key Demands Raised by Protesters
The demonstrators presented a series of demands aimed at improving transparency and accountability in recruitment examinations. One of their primary demands was the resignation of Union Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan.
They also called for reforms to ensure fair and transparent examination procedures.
A significant section of the crowd focused on concerns surrounding two major recruitment examinations conducted in Uttar Pradesh during the past few months.
Protesters demanded the release of detailed scorecards for the Uttar Pradesh Police Sub-Inspector examination held on March 14 and 15, the results of which were announced on May 7.
They also sought the cancellation and re-conduct of the Lekhpal recruitment examination held on May 21, alleging procedural irregularities. Additionally, they pressed for greater openness and fairness in the overall recruitment process.
These demands were not new.
A similar demonstration had taken place in Prayagraj on May 29, where students had warned authorities that if their concerns remained unaddressed, they would organise a larger protest in Lucknow on June 12.
The protest also highlighted allegations involving three coaching institutes whose owners reportedly participated in the demonstration.
According to the protesters, action was taken against the institutions following their involvement.
However, the Prayagraj Development Authority (PDA) maintained that the buildings had been sealed because they were operating without completing the required legal and administrative formalities.
Dipke arrived at Eco Garden at around 2 pm and publicly extended his support to the students.
He stated that he had come to stand alongside students and teachers who were demanding justice and transparency.
Referring to the controversy surrounding the UP Lekhpal examination and allegations linked to the UP SI examination, he urged authorities to conduct a thorough investigation and address the concerns raised by candidates.
He further alleged that examination paper leaks had become widespread and claimed that very few major examinations had remained untouched by such controversies.
Reiterating his criticism, he renewed the demand for the Union Education Minister’s resignation.
Students Share Their Concerns
Jitendra, a student from Jaunpur district who is currently preparing for the UPSC examination in Prayagraj, said he travelled to Lucknow with friends because he believed the protest offered an important platform for students to make their voices heard.
Speaking to reporters, he explained that the objective was not merely to protest but to ensure that examinations are conducted honestly and that results are declared fairly and transparently.
He stressed that students deserve a recruitment system they can trust.
When asked about his views on the CJP-led movement, Jitendra responded that he would support anyone who genuinely raises issues affecting students and job aspirants.
Another participant, Aman Verma, alleged that candidates had been demanding the cancellation of the Lekhpal examination because of suspected irregularities.
He also pointed to concerns regarding the UP SI recruitment process, claiming that candidates were informed only about whether they had qualified, without being provided detailed scorecards.
Clarifying his presence at the protest, Aman said the students’ demonstration had been planned independently before the political support arrived.
However, he noted that they shared common concerns regarding examination leaks and recruitment transparency, making the issues closely connected.
One of the most striking scenes at the protest involved the young Class X student who attended with her father, Gurmeet Singh, a businessman from Lucknow, along with other family members.
Singh said they had joined the gathering because they felt a responsibility to support the aspirations of the younger generation.
He explained that the family had been following updates from the CJP on Instagram and felt compelled to participate.
According to him, supporting the movement was not just a political choice but a moral one rooted in concern for students’ futures.
While acknowledging that numerous challenges confront the education sector, Singh argued that the most fundamental issue remains the Right to Education.
He said that quality education should be accessible to every child and expressed concern that many young people still struggle to receive that basic guarantee.
He added that their participation in the protest was driven by a desire to defend and strengthen that right for future generations.
