Mamata Banerjee Refuses to Resign After Bengal Poll Defeat, Alleges ‘Conspiracy’ Behind Election Results

Mamata Banerjee has refused to step down from her position following the defeat of her party in the West Bengal Assembly elections, claiming that the outcome was not a genuine public mandate but the result of a larger conspiracy.

Speaking to the media on Tuesday, the Trinamool Congress chief said she would continue her political fight and focus on strengthening the opposition INDIA alliance at the national level.

She asserted that her party had not truly lost the election, alleging that the electoral process had been manipulated.

“There is no question of resignation because we have not been defeated by the people’s mandate.

We have been defeated by a conspiracy,” Banerjee said firmly. “Why should I resign? We have not lost. Votes have been looted.”

The veteran leader accused the Election Commission of India of working in favour of the BJP during the elections.

According to her, the Trinamool Congress was not fighting only against the BJP but also against institutions that were expected to remain neutral.

Mamata Banerjee claimed that the election process witnessed unprecedented irregularities and described it as one of the darkest phases in the country’s democratic history.

“I have never seen such an election in my entire political life,” she said. “A dark chapter has been written in history.”

She also launched a sharp attack on the Chief Election Commissioner, accusing the election machinery of failing to maintain impartiality.

Banerjee alleged that central agencies and sections of the administration worked together to influence the electoral atmosphere through raids, transfers, and biased actions.

Questioning the fairness of constitutional institutions, she said the democratic process had been compromised during the elections.

At the same time, Banerjee hinted that she still has constitutional and legal options available and may take action under constitutional provisions in the coming days.

While she did not elaborate further, her remarks suggested that the Trinamool Congress could challenge aspects of the election outcome through institutional channels.

The West Bengal leader also revealed that several leaders from the Indian opposition bloc had reached out to express solidarity after the results. She indicated that her political focus would now expand beyond state politics toward strengthening opposition unity across the country.

Banerjee further said she was prepared to return to mass politics and public movements, asserting that she would continue her struggle from the streets if necessary.

“So long as I was in office, I tolerated many things,” she said emotionally. “Now I am like a free bird, an ordinary person. I will fight on the streets.”

Her remarks signal that despite the electoral setback, Banerjee intends to remain politically active and position herself as a key opposition voice against the BJP in the national political landscape.
