Manav Suthar delivered the decisive spell when India needed it most, producing a brilliant burst on the final day to seal a 165-run victory over Sri Lanka in Galle and give the visitors a 1-0 lead in the Test series.
The left-arm spinner had already played a major part in Sri Lanka’s first-innings collapse with four wickets.
On the fifth morning, he returned with an even more destructive spell, finishing with 6 for 55 as Sri Lanka were bowled out for 206 while chasing a daunting target.
His match figures of 10 for 131 marked the best performance of his Test career and underlined India’s dominance through spin in the contest.
The victory was also significant for India in the ongoing World Test Championship cycle.
It was their first red-ball win since their home series sweep of the West Indies last October.
Sri Lanka began the final day at 84 for 4, still requiring another 288 runs for victory. For much of the morning, however, the hosts showed remarkable resistance.
Captain Dhananjaya de Silva and Sonal Dinusha absorbed the early pressure for almost 90 minutes, using the sweep effectively against India’s spinners.
The pair frustrated the Indian bowlers with a determined partnership of 95 runs from 202 deliveries.
Both batters reached half-centuries as Sri Lanka attempted to keep their unlikely chase alive.
Ravindra Jadeja eventually provided the breakthrough. He had dismissed de Silva on the previous day, only for the delivery to be called a no-ball.
On the fifth morning, he finally got his man, with the Sri Lankan captain falling at short fine leg while attempting another sweep.
Niroshan Dickwella then attempted to disrupt the Indian attack with his movement at the crease and an animated exchange involving Yashasvi Jaiswal.
But his resistance was short-lived as he edged Prasidh Krishna to the wicketkeeper.
The responsibility then fell almost entirely on Dinusha, who continued to battle against the Indian spinners.
He added 59 runs to his overnight score and appeared set to complete another century in the match.
But Suthar ended his resistance at a crucial moment.
Dinusha, who fell just 13 runs short of a second century in the Test, was dismissed while attempting a relatively casual stroke off a delivery drifting down the leg side.
The ball took an inside edge, deflected off his pad and was caught at leg gully.
That wicket opened the door for Suthar to tear through the remaining Sri Lankan batting.
On the very next delivery, he trapped Prabath Jayasuriya, raising the prospect of a hat-trick.
Lahiru Kumara survived the next ball, but Suthar dismissed him with the final delivery of the over to complete his second five-wicket haul in Test cricket.
The spinner returned shortly afterwards to remove Keshara Nuwantha and complete Sri Lanka’s innings, ending with six wickets and securing a memorable 10-wicket match haul.
India’s left-arm spin combination proved especially effective throughout the match. Jadeja took three wickets in the first innings and added one more in the second, while Suthar claimed 10 wickets overall.
Together, the two left-arm spinners accounted for 14 of Sri Lanka’s 20 wickets.
India’s victory was also built on a strong batting performance earlier in the match.
Devdutt Padikkal, making the most of his opportunity at No. 3 in the absence of the injured Sai Sudharsan, struck a superb maiden international century in the first innings.
KL Rahul contributed 82, and the two batters put together a valuable century partnership for the second wicket as India, having chosen to bat first, posted 462.
Padikkal followed his first-innings century with another useful contribution of 44 in the second innings.
Rishabh Pant also played an important role, smashing 66 from just 69 balls to give India’s scoring rate a late surge.
But when the contest reached its final stage, it was Suthar who took centre stage.
His devastating spell transformed Sri Lanka’s fading resistance into a comprehensive Indian victory and handed the visitors a valuable early advantage in the series.

श्रीलंका की पहली पारी में चार विकेट लेने वाले सुथार ने पांचवें दिन और भी घातक गेंदबाजी की। उन्होंने दूसरी पारी में 6 विकेट लेकर मेजबान टीम को 206 रन पर समेट दिया।
मैच में उनके 10 विकेट 131 रन देकर आए, जो उनके टेस्ट करियर का अब तक का सर्वश्रेष्ठ प्रदर्शन है।

पडिक्कल ने दूसरी पारी में भी 44 रन का योगदान दिया।
वहीं ऋषभ पंत ने तेजतर्रार बल्लेबाजी करते हुए 69 गेंदों पर 66 रन बनाए और भारत की रन गति को तेज किया।
हालांकि भारत की बल्लेबाजी ने मैच की दिशा तय करने में अहम भूमिका निभाई, लेकिन अंतिम दिन गॉल में जीत की कहानी मानव सुथार के नाम रही।
उनकी शानदार गेंदबाजी ने श्रीलंका के प्रतिरोध को खत्म किया और भारत को 165 रन की बड़ी जीत के साथ टेस्ट श्रृंखला में शुरुआती बढ़त दिला दी।
