PM Modi Welcomes US-Iran Peace Understanding, Hopes for Stability and Reopening of Strait of Hormuz

Prime Minister Narendra Modi has welcomed the understanding reached between the United States and Iran to end the conflict in West Asia, expressing hope that the breakthrough would pave the way for lasting peace and restore stability in a region that has witnessed months of violence and economic disruption.

The Prime Minister’s remarks came just hours after American and Iranian officials announced that they had reached an agreement to halt hostilities and reopen the strategically important Strait of Hormuz, one of the world’s busiest energy shipping routes.

Currently on a day-long visit to Bratislava, the capital of Slovakia, as part of his Europe tour, Modi shared his reaction in a post on X.

“I welcome the understanding reached between the United States and Iran on ending the conflict in West Asia, which has caused serious economic disruption across the world and led to loss of life in many countries,” the Prime Minister wrote.

Emphasising the importance of peace in the region, Modi said India hopes the implementation of the agreement will help restore stability and normalcy in West Asia and ensure the uninterrupted movement of global trade and maritime traffic.

“India hopes that the implementation of this understanding will help restore peace and stability in the region and ensure the freedom of navigation and commerce,” he said.

The Prime Minister further expressed optimism that discussions on the remaining unresolved issues would continue constructively and eventually result in a durable and comprehensive settlement.

“We look forward to deliberations on the remaining issues reaching a sustainable final agreement,” he added.

Trump Announces Completion of Deal

Earlier in the day, US President Donald Trump announced on his social media platform, Truth Social, that an agreement with Iran had been finalised.

“The Deal with the Islamic Republic of Iran is now complete,” Trump said.

The US President also stated that the Strait of Hormuz, a crucial maritime corridor through which a significant share of the world’s oil and gas supplies passes, would reopen on Friday.

The waterway had remained effectively shut for months amid escalating regional tensions and military confrontations.

Trump further announced that he had ordered an end to the US blockade of Iranian ports and declared that commercial shipping activities could resume.

“Ships of the World, start your engines. Let the oil flow!” Trump wrote, signalling a return to normal maritime operations.

Pakistan Confirms Agreement, Formal Signing Planned in Switzerland

Trump’s announcement came shortly after Pakistan Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif confirmed that an agreement had been reached to end the conflict.

According to Sharif, the memorandum of understanding provides for the immediate and permanent cessation of military operations across all fronts, including Lebanon, where tensions had also intensified during the broader regional conflict.

The agreement is scheduled to be formally signed on Friday in Switzerland, marking what could become a significant diplomatic milestone in efforts to restore peace in West Asia.

Meanwhile, Iran’s Supreme National Security Council also issued a statement indicating that military operations on all fronts, including in Lebanon, would end permanently beginning Monday night.

A Conflict With Global Consequences

The prolonged conflict in West Asia has had far-reaching consequences well beyond the region. Apart from causing substantial loss of life, the crisis has disrupted global trade, unsettled energy markets and raised concerns about maritime security.

The temporary closure of the Strait of Hormuz had triggered fears of supply shortages and contributed to volatility in global oil and gas prices, affecting economies across the world, including India.

Against this backdrop, Prime Minister Modi’s response underscores India’s support for dialogue, diplomacy and peaceful resolution of conflicts.

With the proposed agreement now in place, global attention will remain focused on its implementation and whether it can lead to a lasting and sustainable peace in one of the world’s most strategically important regions.
