Rahul Gandhi, Priyanka Vadra Detained After Protest Outside PM Residence Over NEET Issue and Police Action
New Delhi: Congress leader and Leader of the Opposition in the Lok Sabha Rahul Gandhi, along with Priyanka Gandhi Vadra and several senior party leaders, was detained by Delhi Police on Tuesday after staging a sit-in protest for more than two hours outside Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s official residence.
The demonstration was organised in protest against the police action on the Cockroach Janta Party (CJP)-led Parliament march, with the Congress later stating that its leaders had been taken to Model Town Police Station.
The protest, held near 7, Lok Kalyan Marg, marked an escalation in the Congress party’s criticism of the Centre over the handling of the recent student agitation.
The opposition maintained that the police action against demonstrators was excessive and sought accountability from the government over the alleged NEET examination paper leak controversy.
According to Union Minister Jitendra Singh, who was deputed by the government to engage with the protesters, Rahul Gandhi initially sought a discussion in Parliament on the NEET paper leak and the protests linked to it.
Singh said the government agreed to the request, but Gandhi later added a second demand seeking the resignation of Union Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan.
After the discussions failed to produce a breakthrough, Singh left the site and police subsequently detained the Congress leaders, bringing the prolonged demonstration to an end.
Joined by Wayanad MP Priyanka Gandhi Vadra and several party colleagues, Rahul Gandhi reached the Prime Minister’s residence on Tuesday afternoon and began a sit-in protest while raising slogans against the Union government.
Demonstrators demanded the resignation of Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Union Home Minister Amit Shah.
During the protest, Union Minister Jitendra Singh arrived to hold discussions with Gandhi before leaving the venue.
Samajwadi Party president Akhilesh Yadav and NCP (SP) leader Supriya Sule also extended support by joining the protest.
In a post on social media platform X, Rahul Gandhi said the Congress had marched to the Prime Minister’s residence to seek answers regarding the alleged police excesses against student protesters.
He asserted that both the Prime Minister and the Union Home Minister should resign, accusing them of jeopardising the future of the country’s youth.
Visuals shared by the Congress on social media showed Rahul Gandhi distributing zip ties among party leaders, who tied their wrists together in an apparent attempt to make detention more difficult.
Meanwhile, Delhi Police erected additional barricades on roads leading to the Prime Minister’s residence to prevent more supporters from reaching the protest site.
Congress MP Syed Naseer Hussain said the party’s demand was centred on fixing accountability and seeking the Prime Minister’s resignation.
Rahul Gandhi later appealed to citizens across the country to participate in the demonstration, describing the police action against students as an attack on every Indian family.
He maintained that students deserved justice and asserted that their concerns could not be ignored.
Earlier in Parliament, the Congress leader criticised the government’s response to the protests, stating that the treatment meted out to young demonstrators was unacceptable.
He argued that competitive examinations represented one of the few remaining opportunities for India’s youth and alleged that repeated examination controversies had undermined students’ confidence in the education system.
Expanding on his criticism, Gandhi said the issue extended far beyond education and reflected growing anxiety among young people about their future.
He questioned why the government was not focusing on strengthening the examination system instead of responding through police action.
He also reiterated his demand that Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan resign, while adding that accountability should also extend to Union Home Minister Amit Shah and, ultimately, Prime Minister Narendra Modi.
Responding after the protest concluded, Union Minister Jitendra Singh said the government had deputed him and Union Home Secretary Govind Mohan to request Rahul Gandhi and other Congress leaders to end the demonstration to avoid inconvenience to commuters and disruption to traffic in the area.
Singh said Rahul Gandhi had initially indicated that he would withdraw the protest if the government agreed to hold a parliamentary discussion on the NEET issue.
According to the minister, after receiving assurance that such a discussion would take place, Gandhi introduced an additional demand seeking the resignation of the Education Minister.
Singh claimed that this amounted to changing the conditions after an agreement had already been reached.
Calling the development unfortunate, the Union Minister said it was not expected of a senior political leader and the Leader of the Opposition to alter previously stated demands during negotiations.
He reiterated that the government remained prepared to discuss every aspect of the NEET controversy and the related protests in Parliament, while alleging that Rahul Gandhi’s conduct was inconsistent with democratic traditions.

नई दिल्ली: लोकसभा में विपक्ष के नेता राहुल गांधी, कांग्रेस महासचिव प्रियंका गांधी वाड्रा और पार्टी के कई वरिष्ठ नेताओं को मंगलवार को प्रधानमंत्री नरेंद्र मोदी के आधिकारिक आवास के बाहर दो घंटे से अधिक समय तक धरना देने के बाद दिल्ली पुलिस ने हिरासत में ले लिया।
यह प्रदर्शन कॉकरोच जनता पार्टी (सीजेपी) के नेतृत्व में संसद मार्च के दौरान हुई पुलिस कार्रवाई के विरोध में आयोजित किया गया था। कांग्रेस ने बाद में बताया कि उसके नेताओं को मॉडल टाउन थाने ले जाया गया।
7, लोक कल्याण मार्ग के निकट आयोजित इस प्रदर्शन के माध्यम से कांग्रेस ने केंद्र सरकार पर छात्रों के आंदोलन से निपटने के तरीके को लेकर तीखा हमला बोला।
पार्टी का आरोप था कि कथित नीट परीक्षा प्रश्नपत्र लीक मामले और उससे जुड़े विरोध प्रदर्शनों पर सरकार ने संवेदनशीलता के बजाय बल प्रयोग का रास्ता अपनाया।
सरकार की ओर से बातचीत के लिए भेजे गए केंद्रीय मंत्री जितेंद्र सिंह ने बताया कि राहुल गांधी ने शुरुआत में केवल नीट पेपर लीक और उससे जुड़े विरोध प्रदर्शनों पर संसद में चर्चा कराने की मांग रखी थी।
उनके अनुसार सरकार ने इस मांग को स्वीकार कर लिया, लेकिन बाद में राहुल गांधी ने केंद्रीय शिक्षा मंत्री धर्मेंद्र प्रधान के इस्तीफे की अतिरिक्त मांग भी जोड़ दी।
बातचीत किसी निष्कर्ष पर नहीं पहुंचने के बाद केंद्रीय मंत्री वहां से लौट गए और इसके बाद पुलिस ने कांग्रेस नेताओं को हिरासत में लेकर धरना समाप्त कराया।
वायनाड सांसद प्रियंका गांधी वाड्रा तथा अन्य कांग्रेस नेताओं के साथ राहुल गांधी मंगलवार दोपहर प्रधानमंत्री आवास के निकट पहुंचे और धरने पर बैठ गए।
इस दौरान प्रदर्शनकारियों ने प्रधानमंत्री नरेंद्र मोदी और केंद्रीय गृह मंत्री अमित शाह के इस्तीफे की मांग करते हुए नारे लगाए। सरकार की ओर से बातचीत के लिए केंद्रीय मंत्री जितेंद्र सिंह मौके पर पहुंचे और राहुल गांधी से चर्चा करने के बाद वापस लौट गए।
प्रदर्शन में समाजवादी पार्टी के अध्यक्ष अखिलेश यादव और राष्ट्रवादी कांग्रेस पार्टी (शरद पवार गुट) की नेता सुप्रिया सुले ने भी भाग लेकर समर्थन व्यक्त किया।
सोशल मीडिया मंच एक्स पर साझा किए गए संदेश में राहुल गांधी ने कहा कि कांग्रेस प्रधानमंत्री से उन छात्रों पर हुई कथित पुलिस कार्रवाई का जवाब मांगने उनके आवास तक पहुंची है।
उन्होंने आरोप लगाया कि देश के युवाओं के भविष्य को नुकसान पहुंचाया गया है और इसके लिए प्रधानमंत्री तथा केंद्रीय गृह मंत्री दोनों को नैतिक जिम्मेदारी लेते हुए इस्तीफा देना चाहिए।
कांग्रेस द्वारा साझा किए गए एक वीडियो में राहुल गांधी अपने सहयोगियों को जिप टाई बांटते हुए दिखाई दिए। प्रदर्शनकारी नेताओं ने इन्हें अपने हाथों पर बांध लिया ताकि उन्हें हिरासत में लेना आसान न हो।
इस बीच दिल्ली पुलिस ने प्रधानमंत्री आवास की ओर जाने वाले मार्गों पर अतिरिक्त बैरिकेड लगाकर अन्य प्रदर्शनकारियों को वहां पहुंचने से रोक दिया। कांग्रेस सांसद सैयद नासिर हुसैन ने कहा कि पार्टी की मांग स्पष्ट है—सरकार जवाबदेही तय करे और प्रधानमंत्री इस्तीफा दें।
इसके बाद राहुल गांधी ने देशवासियों से भी आंदोलन में शामिल होने की अपील की। उन्होंने कहा कि छात्रों पर हमला केवल विद्यार्थियों पर नहीं बल्कि हर भारतीय परिवार पर हमला है। उनका कहना था कि छात्रों को न्याय मिलना चाहिए और उनकी आवाज को दबाया नहीं जा सकता।
संसद परिसर में मीडिया से बातचीत के दौरान राहुल गांधी ने प्रदर्शनकारियों पर हुई पुलिस कार्रवाई की आलोचना करते हुए कहा कि देश के युवाओं के साथ इस प्रकार का व्यवहार स्वीकार्य नहीं हो सकता।
उन्होंने कहा कि प्रतियोगी परीक्षाएं युवाओं के लिए अवसर का सबसे महत्वपूर्ण माध्यम हैं और यदि वही व्यवस्था सवालों के घेरे में आ जाए तो उनके भविष्य पर गंभीर असर पड़ता है।
उन्होंने आगे कहा कि यह विवाद केवल शिक्षा व्यवस्था तक सीमित नहीं है, बल्कि देश के युवाओं के भविष्य से जुड़ा हुआ है।
राहुल गांधी ने आरोप लगाया कि सरकार परीक्षा प्रणाली में सुधार करने के बजाय विरोध प्रदर्शनों को बलपूर्वक दबाने का प्रयास कर रही है।
उन्होंने एक बार फिर शिक्षा मंत्री धर्मेंद्र प्रधान के इस्तीफे की मांग दोहराते हुए कहा कि जवाबदेही गृह मंत्री अमित शाह और अंततः प्रधानमंत्री नरेंद्र मोदी तक भी तय होनी चाहिए।
धरना समाप्त होने के बाद केंद्रीय मंत्री जितेंद्र सिंह ने बयान जारी कर कहा कि सरकार ने उन्हें और केंद्रीय गृह सचिव गोविंद मोहन को प्रदर्शनकारियों से बातचीत कर धरना समाप्त कराने के लिए भेजा था, ताकि आम जनता को यातायात संबंधी असुविधा का सामना न करना पड़े।
जितेंद्र सिंह के अनुसार राहुल गांधी ने प्रारंभ में कहा था कि यदि सरकार संसद में नीट मुद्दे पर चर्चा के लिए तैयार हो जाए तो वह तुरंत अपना प्रदर्शन समाप्त कर देंगे।
मंत्री ने दावा किया कि सरकार द्वारा चर्चा के लिए सहमति देने के बाद राहुल गांधी ने शिक्षा मंत्री के इस्तीफे की नई मांग जोड़ दी, जिससे बातचीत का स्वरूप बदल गया।
केंद्रीय मंत्री ने इसे दुर्भाग्यपूर्ण बताते हुए कहा कि विपक्ष के नेता जैसे वरिष्ठ जनप्रतिनिधि से बातचीत के दौरान अपनी पूर्व घोषित मांगों को बदलने की अपेक्षा नहीं की जाती।
उन्होंने दोहराया कि सरकार नीट विवाद और उससे जुड़े सभी मुद्दों पर संसद में चर्चा के लिए तैयार है तथा आरोप लगाया कि राहुल गांधी का यह रवैया लोकतांत्रिक परंपराओं के अनुरूप नहीं है।
