Shabana Azmi Backs Student Protest, Calls for Dialogue Over Police Action and Education Reforms
New Delhi: Veteran actor Shabana Azmi joined the student protest organised by the Cockroach Janta Party (CJP) on July 20, where demonstrators demanded the resignation of Union Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan over issues related to the education system.
Among the few prominent personalities from the film industry present at the protest, Azmi later spoke about the events she claimed to have witnessed at the demonstration.
Recalling the developments at the protest site, the veteran actor said she personally saw police using tear gas and carrying out baton charges against the gathering.
She alleged that several students, including young women, were struck during the action.
Refuting claims that the violence began after someone from the crowd threw a shoe, Azmi said her own observations and conversations with the students suggested otherwise.
According to her, the protesters repeatedly maintained that they had intended to conduct a completely peaceful demonstration and even showed her injuries they claimed were sustained during the police action.
Speaking about the mood among the participants, Azmi said the students were deeply upset and angry but remained committed to maintaining a non-violent movement.
She said she was particularly moved by the determination displayed by teenagers, including children as young as 15 years, who, despite the tense atmosphere, remained disciplined in their approach.
Expressing solidarity with the protesters, she questioned why the authorities had not initiated any meaningful dialogue with them.
The actor further claimed that although the protest site had been cleared on Monday, she had received information that if demonstrators assembled again on Tuesday, paramilitary personnel might be deployed to control the situation.
She questioned whether such an approach was appropriate and expressed concern that the situation could escalate unnecessarily if force was used instead of communication.
Responding to a question about the possible presence of anti-social elements during the demonstration, Azmi acknowledged that such individuals often attempt to exploit public protests.
However, she maintained that the possibility of miscreants entering a gathering did not justify avoiding engagement with genuine student representatives.
Referring to a meeting between two representatives of the protesters and Union Health Minister JP Nadda, Azmi said she found it difficult to understand why, according to the students, the interaction lasted only around ten minutes.
She claimed they were asked to submit their grievances in writing but were not given an opportunity for an extended discussion.
Stressing the need for communication, she questioned why the government could not hold a proper dialogue with the students.
Highlighting the broader objectives of the movement, Azmi said the protesters were seeking comprehensive reforms in the education sector and that their demands extended beyond the resignation of the Union Education Minister.
She also alleged that mobile phone jammers had been installed at the protest venue and claimed that the microphone being used at the gathering was disconnected for some time.
Clarifying speculation regarding her political position, the veteran actor stated that she has never been associated with any political party and has no intention of entering active politics in the future.
She revealed that on July 15, she and her husband, noted lyricist and writer Javed Akhtar, had jointly written to Prime Minister Narendra Modi, appealing for dialogue with the protesting students.
Both Azmi and Akhtar have previously served as nominated members of the Rajya Sabha.
According to Azmi, the letter urged the Prime Minister to engage with the students as concerned citizens rather than allowing the situation to deteriorate.
She said the appeal was made in their personal capacity and not as part of any political campaign.
Claiming that they had been assured of a response within two days, Azmi said no communication was received even after four days, prompting her to publicly express support for the students.
She added that the objective was never to draw attention to herself or her husband but to amplify the voices of young people whom she described as displaying extraordinary courage.
On Monday, Azmi also shared photographs and video clips from the protest through her social media accounts.
Actor Prakash Raj was also present at the demonstration, extending his support to the students participating in the agitation.
छात्र आंदोलन के समर्थन में उतरीं शबाना आज़मी, पुलिस कार्रवाई पर उठाए सवाल और संवाद की वकालत की
नई दिल्ली: वरिष्ठ अभिनेत्री शबाना आज़मी ने 20 जुलाई को कॉकरोच जनता पार्टी (सीजेपी) द्वारा आयोजित छात्र प्रदर्शन में हिस्सा लेकर केंद्रीय शिक्षा मंत्री धर्मेंद्र प्रधान के इस्तीफे की मांग कर रहे विद्यार्थियों के प्रति अपना समर्थन व्यक्त किया।
फिल्म जगत से इस आंदोलन में मौजूद चुनिंदा हस्तियों में शामिल शबाना ने बाद में प्रदर्शन के दौरान देखे गए घटनाक्रम को लेकर अपनी प्रतिक्रिया साझा की।
प्रदर्शन स्थल पर मौजूद रहने का उल्लेख करते हुए उन्होंने दावा किया कि उन्होंने अपनी आंखों के सामने पुलिस द्वारा आंसू गैस के गोले छोड़े जाते और लाठीचार्ज होते देखा।
उनके अनुसार कई छात्र-छात्राओं, विशेषकर युवा लड़कियों, को भी लाठियों का सामना करना पड़ा।
उन्होंने इस दावे को भी खारिज किया कि हिंसा की शुरुआत किसी प्रदर्शनकारी द्वारा जूता फेंकने से हुई थी।
शबाना ने कहा कि छात्रों ने उन्हें अपने घायल होने के निशान दिखाए और लगातार यह दोहराया कि उनका आंदोलन पूरी तरह शांतिपूर्ण रखने की अपील मंच से भी की जा रही थी।
छात्रों के मनोभाव का उल्लेख करते हुए अभिनेत्री ने कहा कि वे गुस्से और आक्रोश से भरे हुए जरूर थे, लेकिन उन्होंने अहिंसक तरीके से अपना विरोध जारी रखने का संकल्प नहीं छोड़ा।
उन्होंने कहा कि महज 15 वर्ष की उम्र के बच्चों का साहस और संयम उन्हें बेहद प्रभावित कर गया।
शबाना ने छात्रों की इस मांग का समर्थन किया कि सरकार उनकी बात सुने और आश्चर्य जताया कि अब तक उनसे किसी स्तर पर सार्थक बातचीत क्यों नहीं की गई।
उन्होंने यह भी दावा किया कि सोमवार को प्रदर्शन स्थल खाली करा दिए जाने के बावजूद उन्हें जानकारी मिली थी कि यदि मंगलवार को दोबारा भीड़ जुटती है तो स्थिति संभालने के लिए अर्धसैनिक बलों को तैनात किया जा सकता है।
शबाना ने सवाल उठाया कि क्या किसी लोकतांत्रिक आंदोलन से निपटने का यही उचित तरीका है और क्या बातचीत के बजाय बल प्रयोग समाधान हो सकता है।
प्रदर्शन में असामाजिक तत्वों की संभावित मौजूदगी से जुड़े सवाल पर शबाना ने स्वीकार किया कि बड़े आंदोलनों में ऐसे लोग घुसने की कोशिश कर सकते हैं।
हालांकि उन्होंने कहा कि इस संभावना के आधार पर वास्तविक छात्र प्रतिनिधियों के साथ संवाद से बचना उचित नहीं माना जा सकता।
उन्होंने यह भी कहा कि प्रदर्शनकारियों के दो प्रतिनिधियों ने केंद्रीय स्वास्थ्य मंत्री जेपी नड्डा से मुलाकात की थी, लेकिन उनकी जानकारी के अनुसार बैठक बहुत कम समय चली।
शबाना के मुताबिक उनसे केवल अपनी शिकायतें लिखित रूप में देने को कहा गया और विस्तृत चर्चा नहीं की गई। उन्होंने सवाल उठाया कि छात्रों के साथ खुलकर संवाद स्थापित करने में आखिर बाधा क्या है।
आंदोलन की मांगों पर प्रकाश डालते हुए अभिनेत्री ने कहा कि छात्रों की लड़ाई केवल केंद्रीय शिक्षा मंत्री के इस्तीफे तक सीमित नहीं है, बल्कि वे शिक्षा व्यवस्था में व्यापक सुधार चाहते हैं।
उन्होंने यह भी आरोप लगाया कि प्रदर्शन स्थल पर मोबाइल फोन जैमर लगाए गए थे और कुछ समय के लिए सभा में इस्तेमाल किया जा रहा माइक्रोफोन भी बंद कर दिया गया था।
अपने राजनीतिक रुख को स्पष्ट करते हुए शबाना आज़मी ने कहा कि उनका किसी भी राजनीतिक दल से कभी संबंध नहीं रहा है और भविष्य में भी सक्रिय राजनीति में आने का उनका कोई इरादा नहीं है।
उन्होंने बताया कि 15 जुलाई को उन्होंने और उनके पति, प्रसिद्ध लेखक एवं गीतकार जावेद अख्तर, ने प्रधानमंत्री नरेंद्र मोदी को एक पत्र लिखकर छात्रों से संवाद शुरू करने की अपील की थी। दोनों पहले राष्ट्रपति द्वारा मनोनीत राज्यसभा सदस्य रह चुके हैं।
शबाना ने कहा कि पत्र में उन्होंने स्वयं को चिंतित नागरिक और पूर्व राज्यसभा सदस्य बताते हुए प्रधानमंत्री से आग्रह किया था कि छात्रों की बात सुनी जाए और उनसे बातचीत शुरू की जाए।
उनके अनुसार उन्हें दो दिन के भीतर उत्तर मिलने का आश्वासन दिया गया था, लेकिन चार दिन बीत जाने के बाद भी कोई प्रतिक्रिया नहीं मिली।
इसके बाद उन्होंने सार्वजनिक रूप से छात्रों के समर्थन में सामने आने का फैसला किया।
उन्होंने कहा कि उनका उद्देश्य स्वयं या अपने परिवार को चर्चा का विषय बनाना नहीं था, बल्कि उन युवाओं की आवाज को सामने लाना था जिन्होंने अत्यंत साहस के साथ अपनी बात रखने का प्रयास किया।
सोमवार को शबाना आज़मी ने अपने सोशल मीडिया मंचों पर प्रदर्शन से जुड़े कई वीडियो और तस्वीरें भी साझा कीं। इस दौरान अभिनेता प्रकाश राज भी आंदोलन स्थल पर मौजूद रहे और उन्होंने भी छात्रों के प्रति अपना समर्थन व्यक्त किया।
