Sonam Wangchuk’s Hunger Strike Enters Day 20; Doctors Warn of Serious Health Risks as Opposition Rallies Behind Protest
New Delhi: Environmental activist Sonam Wangchuk’s indefinite hunger strike demanding the resignation of Union Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan over the alleged NEET-UG paper leak entered its 20th day on Friday, with doctors warning that his physical condition has become critical and could worsen significantly if the fast continues.
Medical experts attending to Wangchuk said his health has shown signs of rapid deterioration due to prolonged fasting.
Despite repeated appeals from doctors and political leaders, the activist has maintained that he will continue his protest until the government responds to the demands raised by students and supporters.
Speaking at the protest site at Jantar Mantar, Wangchuk said ending the fast without any assurance or response from the Centre would send an incorrect message to the country’s youth.
Instead of calling off the agitation, he appealed to supporters to strengthen the proposed Cockroach Janta Party’s Parliament March scheduled for July 20.
The campaign at Jantar Mantar is being led by Wangchuk along with a large number of students. Several student organisations, including the Krantikari Yuva Sangathan (KYS), All India Students’ Association (AISA) and the Students’ Federation of India (SFI), have joined the movement demanding accountability over the alleged examination irregularities.
According to the latest medical bulletin issued by Dr Satish Lamba, Wangchuk has lost more than nine kilograms since beginning his indefinite fast on June 28.
His body weight has now dropped to 56.9 kilograms, raising serious concern among doctors monitoring his condition.
Explaining the medical complications, Dr Lamba said the body initially consumes stored glucose and fat reserves during prolonged fasting. Once these reserves are depleted, muscle tissue begins to break down for energy.
He noted that Wangchuk’s ketone level had earlier reached 3-plus, although improved hydration had reduced it to 2-plus. Elevated uric acid levels, he said, indicate that muscle loss is continuing.
The doctor cautioned that the next stage could be extremely dangerous if the fast continues uninterrupted.
According to him, vital organs may begin to suffer damage, making the situation potentially life-threatening.
He said Wangchuk remains under 24-hour medical supervision to closely monitor any further deterioration.
Appealing for immediate intervention, Dr Lamba described Wangchuk as a valuable national figure and urged the government to act before irreversible complications arise.
He warned that organ damage would significantly increase the health risks and could have serious consequences.
Political support for the protest continued to grow, with Aam Aadmi Party national convenor and former Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal visiting the protest venue on Thursday.
Reiterating his demand for Dharmendra Pradhan’s resignation, Kejriwal also suggested that Sonam Wangchuk would be an appropriate choice to serve as the country’s Education Minister.
Addressing the gathering, Kejriwal urged the Union Government to respond to the concerns raised by students and protesters.
He warned that ignoring the voices of young people could have political consequences in the future.
Farmer leader Rakesh Tikait, who emerged as one of the prominent faces of the 2020–21 farmers’ movement, also reached Jantar Mantar to express solidarity with the ongoing agitation.
The Congress has likewise extended support to the demand seeking the Education Minister’s resignation. However, the party simultaneously appealed to Wangchuk to end his hunger strike in view of his worsening health.
Alongside supporting the protest, the Congress has launched its nationwide campaign titled ‘Chhatron Ki Goonj’, led by Rahul Gandhi, focusing on alleged irregularities in competitive examinations conducted across the country.
Congress General Secretary (Organisation) K.C. Venugopal, in a post on social media platform X, said the party has consistently demanded the resignation of the Union Education Minister and shares Wangchuk’s concerns regarding accountability in the examination system.
He said the Congress would continue raising the issue while requesting Wangchuk to end his fast because of his fragile health.
Amid increasing concern over Wangchuk’s condition, the Delhi High Court directed the authorities to conduct daily medical monitoring of his health.
A Division Bench comprising Chief Justice Devendra Kumar Upadhyaya and Justice Tejas Karia observed that the life of every citizen is precious and deserves protection.
The High Court further ordered that any medical treatment or intervention recommended by government doctors should be provided without delay.
The directions were issued while disposing of a Public Interest Litigation (PIL) filed over concerns regarding Wangchuk’s declining health during his prolonged hunger strike.

नई दिल्ली: पर्यावरण कार्यकर्ता सोनम वांगचुक की कथित नीट-यूजी प्रश्नपत्र लीक मामले में केंद्रीय शिक्षा मंत्री धर्मेंद्र प्रधान के इस्तीफे की मांग को लेकर जारी अनिश्चितकालीन भूख हड़ताल शुक्रवार को 20वें दिन में प्रवेश कर गई।
इस बीच चिकित्सकों ने चेतावनी दी है कि लगातार उपवास के कारण उनकी स्वास्थ्य स्थिति अत्यंत चिंताजनक हो गई है और यदि हड़ताल जारी रही तो स्थिति और गंभीर हो सकती है।
वांगचुक की देखरेख कर रहे डॉक्टरों का कहना है कि लंबे समय तक भोजन न लेने के कारण उनके शरीर में लगातार कमजोरी बढ़ रही है।
हालांकि चिकित्सकों और विभिन्न राजनीतिक दलों की अपीलों के बावजूद उन्होंने स्पष्ट किया है कि सरकार की ओर से ठोस प्रतिक्रिया मिलने तक वह अपना अनशन समाप्त नहीं करेंगे।
जंतर-मंतर पर आंदोलन को संबोधित करते हुए वांगचुक ने कहा कि बिना किसी सरकारी आश्वासन के भूख हड़ताल समाप्त करना देश के युवाओं को गलत संदेश देगा।
उन्होंने समर्थकों से अपील की कि वे अनशन खत्म कराने की मांग करने के बजाय 20 जुलाई को प्रस्तावित ‘कॉकरोच जनता पार्टी’ की संसद मार्च को सफल बनाने में योगदान दें।
जंतर-मंतर पर जारी इस आंदोलन का नेतृत्व वांगचुक स्वयं छात्रों के साथ कर रहे हैं। क्रांतिकारी युवा संगठन (केवाईएस), ऑल इंडिया स्टूडेंट्स एसोसिएशन (आइसा) तथा स्टूडेंट्स फेडरेशन ऑफ इंडिया (एसएफआई) सहित कई छात्र संगठन भी इस विरोध प्रदर्शन में सक्रिय रूप से शामिल हैं।
डॉ. सतीश लांबा द्वारा जारी ताजा मेडिकल बुलेटिन के अनुसार, 28 जून को अनशन शुरू करने के बाद से वांगचुक का वजन नौ किलोग्राम से अधिक घट चुका है।
वर्तमान में उनका वजन 56.9 किलोग्राम रह गया है, जिसे चिकित्सक गंभीर चिंता का विषय मान रहे हैं।
डॉ. लांबा ने बताया कि लंबे उपवास के दौरान पहले शरीर ग्लूकोज और वसा का उपयोग करता है। इसके बाद ऊर्जा के लिए मांसपेशियों का क्षय शुरू हो जाता है।
उन्होंने कहा कि वांगचुक के शरीर में कीटोन स्तर पहले 3-प्लस तक पहुंच गया था, जो बेहतर हाइड्रेशन के बाद 2-प्लस पर आया है। वहीं, बढ़ा हुआ यूरिक एसिड इस बात का संकेत है कि शरीर अब मांसपेशियों का उपयोग कर रहा है।
चिकित्सकों ने आगाह किया कि यदि अनशन जारी रहा तो अगला चरण और अधिक खतरनाक हो सकता है। उनके अनुसार ऐसी स्थिति में शरीर के महत्वपूर्ण अंग प्रभावित होने की आशंका बढ़ जाएगी।
इसी कारण वांगचुक को 24 घंटे चिकित्सकीय निगरानी में रखा गया है ताकि किसी भी आपात स्थिति से तुरंत निपटा जा सके।
डॉ. लांबा ने सरकार से शीघ्र हस्तक्षेप करने की अपील करते हुए कहा कि वांगचुक देश की एक अमूल्य धरोहर हैं और उनके स्वास्थ्य को लेकर कोई जोखिम नहीं उठाया जाना चाहिए।
उन्होंने चेतावनी दी कि यदि शरीर के अंग प्रभावित होने लगे तो स्थिति अत्यंत गंभीर हो सकती है।
आंदोलन को राजनीतिक समर्थन भी लगातार मिल रहा है। आम आदमी पार्टी के राष्ट्रीय संयोजक और पूर्व दिल्ली मुख्यमंत्री अरविंद केजरीवाल गुरुवार को जंतर-मंतर पहुंचे और प्रदर्शनकारियों के साथ एकजुटता जताई।
उन्होंने एक बार फिर केंद्रीय शिक्षा मंत्री के इस्तीफे की मांग दोहराई और यहां तक कहा कि सोनम वांगचुक देश के शिक्षा मंत्री बनने के योग्य हैं।
सभा को संबोधित करते हुए केजरीवाल ने केंद्र सरकार से युवाओं और आंदोलन की आवाज सुनने का आग्रह किया। उन्होंने कहा कि यदि छात्रों की चिंताओं की अनदेखी की गई तो इसके राजनीतिक परिणाम भी सामने आ सकते हैं।
वहीं, किसान नेता राकेश टिकैत, जो वर्ष 2020-21 के किसान आंदोलन के प्रमुख चेहरों में रहे हैं, भी जंतर-मंतर पहुंचे और आंदोलन के प्रति अपना समर्थन व्यक्त किया।
कांग्रेस ने भी शिक्षा मंत्री के इस्तीफे की मांग का समर्थन किया है। हालांकि पार्टी ने वांगचुक की गिरती सेहत को देखते हुए उनसे भूख हड़ताल समाप्त करने की अपील भी की है।
इसी क्रम में कांग्रेस ने राहुल गांधी के नेतृत्व में ‘छात्रों की गूंज’ अभियान भी शुरू किया है, जिसके माध्यम से देशभर में प्रतियोगी परीक्षाओं में कथित अनियमितताओं का मुद्दा उठाया जा रहा है।
कांग्रेस के संगठन महासचिव के.सी. वेणुगोपाल ने सोशल मीडिया मंच एक्स पर लिखा कि पार्टी पिछले डेढ़ महीने से शिक्षा मंत्री के इस्तीफे की मांग कर रही है और परीक्षा व्यवस्था में जवाबदेही की कमी को लेकर सोनम वांगचुक की चिंता से पूरी तरह सहमत है।
उन्होंने कहा कि कांग्रेस यह लड़ाई जारी रखेगी, लेकिन वांगचुक से उनके स्वास्थ्य को देखते हुए अनशन समाप्त करने का अनुरोध भी किया।
इस बीच वांगचुक की बिगड़ती स्वास्थ्य स्थिति पर चिंता जताते हुए दिल्ली हाईकोर्ट ने प्रशासन को उनके स्वास्थ्य की प्रतिदिन चिकित्सकीय निगरानी सुनिश्चित करने का निर्देश दिया।
मुख्य न्यायाधीश देवेंद्र कुमार उपाध्याय और न्यायमूर्ति तेजस करिया की खंडपीठ ने कहा कि प्रत्येक नागरिक का जीवन अत्यंत मूल्यवान है और उसकी रक्षा के लिए हर संभव प्रयास किया जाना चाहिए।
अदालत ने यह भी निर्देश दिया कि सरकारी चिकित्सकों द्वारा सुझाए गए किसी भी आवश्यक उपचार या चिकित्सकीय हस्तक्षेप में किसी प्रकार की देरी नहीं की जानी चाहिए।
यह आदेश वांगचुक के लंबे अनशन के दौरान बिगड़ती स्वास्थ्य स्थिति को लेकर दायर जनहित याचिका का निस्तारण करते हुए दिया गया।
