Trump Appoints Bill Pulte as Acting Director of National Intelligence, Sparking Debate Over Experience
US President Donald Trump has named Bill Pulte, the current Director of the Federal Housing Finance Agency (FHFA), as the Acting Director of National Intelligence (DNI), placing one of his trusted allies in charge of overseeing America’s intelligence community.
The move has drawn significant attention because Pulte’s professional expertise lies primarily in housing finance rather than national security or intelligence operations.
Announcing the decision on his social media platform, Truth Social, Trump said that Pulte would continue to lead the FHFA while also retaining his role as chairman of mortgage finance giants Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac.
In addition to those responsibilities, he will now oversee the nation’s intelligence apparatus on an interim basis.
The President praised the 38-year-old official for his management of highly sensitive financial matters, noting that he supervises organisations connected to more than $10 trillion in assets.
Trump argued that Pulte’s leadership experience and ability to handle critical responsibilities make him well-suited for the temporary assignment.
Pulte takes over the position from former congresswoman Tulsi Gabbard, who stepped down from the role last month after publicly disclosing that her husband had been diagnosed with cancer.
Her departure created a vacancy at a time when intelligence coordination remains central to US foreign and security policy.
The appointment comes amid heightened geopolitical tensions, including the continuing conflict involving Iran.
As a result, the role of Director of National Intelligence carries increased importance in coordinating intelligence assessments, advising policymakers, and monitoring international security developments.
Trump clarified that Pulte’s appointment is temporary and that he will serve in an acting capacity until a permanent nominee is selected and approved by the US Senate.
The decision has generated discussion in political and security circles because Pulte’s career has largely focused on housing policy and financial regulation.
Critics and observers have questioned whether he possesses the national security expertise traditionally associated with the country’s top intelligence position.
A member of the family behind the homebuilding company PulteGroup, Bill Pulte has emerged as one of Trump’s most visible and loyal supporters within the administration.
His rise through the ranks of government has been closely linked to his support for the President’s agenda.
During his tenure at the FHFA, Pulte has attracted attention for referring several high-profile Trump critics for potential criminal investigation.
Among those named were New York Attorney General Letitia James, Senator Adam Schiff, Representative Eric Swalwell, Fulton County District Attorney Fani Willis, and Federal Reserve Governor Lisa Cook.
All of them have rejected the allegations, while some related inquiries have either been dropped or remain unresolved.
Given Pulte’s limited background in intelligence matters and his strong political ties to Trump, his appointment is expected to face scrutiny from lawmakers, national security experts, and political observers.
The coming weeks are likely to see increased debate over whether leadership experience in finance can effectively translate into managing the nation’s intelligence operations during a period of global uncertainty.
