US Allegedly Pressured Countries to Skip Ayatollah Ali Khamenei’s Funeral, 13 Nations Reportedly Scaled Back Participation
Fresh allegations from Iranian media claim that the United States mounted a broad diplomatic campaign to discourage foreign governments from attending the funeral of Iran’s late Supreme Leader, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei.
According to the report, the alleged pressure prompted 13 countries to either cancel their participation or reduce the level of their official representation at the funeral ceremony held in Tehran.
According to Iran’s semi-official Tasnim News Agency, which cited an unnamed Iranian source, the diplomatic effort reportedly began nearly a week before the funeral.
The report claimed that US Secretary of State Marco Rubio, along with American ambassadors stationed across the world, led coordinated outreach aimed at persuading governments to stay away from the ceremony at Tehran’s Imam Khomeini Grand Musalla.
Tasnim further alleged that Washington warned several countries of possible diplomatic and economic repercussions if they decided to attend the funeral.
The report claimed the United States indicated that development assistance could be reduced and bilateral ties could suffer if official delegations were sent to the event.
The Iranian news agency also alleged that US embassies and diplomatic missions informed multiple governments that participation in Ayatollah Ali Khamenei’s funeral would be viewed by Washington as an unfriendly move.
According to the report, countries were told such a decision could negatively affect their future relationship with the United States.
Quoting two Arab diplomats, Tasnim claimed that Secretary of State Marco Rubio personally contacted at least five Arab governments and urged them to avoid attending the funeral.
The report further alleged that the conversations included warnings that participation in the Tehran ceremony could have adverse consequences for bilateral cooperation with the United States.
Similar allegations were made regarding African countries. According to the report, several African governments were allegedly cautioned that taking part in the funeral could result in reductions to US development assistance.
Tasnim claimed that the alleged diplomatic campaign ultimately led 13 countries to revise their plans.
These reportedly included three Eastern European nations, five African countries, two Gulf Arab states and two major East Asian nations, all of which either withdrew from the event or downgraded the level of their representation.
Meanwhile, massive crowds gathered in Tehran to participate in the funeral procession.
According to the Associated Press (AP), hundreds of thousands of mourners chanted slogans of “Death to America” and “Death to Israel” while calling for retaliation over the February 28 attack that reportedly killed the 86-year-old Iranian Supreme Leader, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei.

ईरान की अर्द्ध-सरकारी समाचार एजेंसी तसनीम ने एक अज्ञात ईरानी सूत्र के हवाले से दावा किया कि यह कूटनीतिक पहल अंतिम संस्कार से लगभग एक सप्ताह पहले शुरू कर दी गई थी। रिपोर्ट में कहा गया कि अमेरिकी विदेश मंत्री मार्को रुबियो और दुनिया भर में तैनात अमेरिकी राजदूतों ने समन्वित प्रयास करते हुए विभिन्न देशों से संपर्क किया और उन्हें तेहरान स्थित इमाम खुमैनी ग्रैंड मुसल्ला में आयोजित समारोह से दूरी बनाए रखने के लिए प्रेरित किया।
तसनीम ने यह भी आरोप लगाया कि अमेरिका ने कई देशों को चेतावनी दी कि यदि वे अंतिम संस्कार में आधिकारिक प्रतिनिधिमंडल भेजते हैं तो उन्हें कूटनीतिक और आर्थिक परिणामों का सामना करना पड़ सकता है। रिपोर्ट के अनुसार, वाशिंगटन ने संकेत दिया कि ऐसे देशों की विकास सहायता में कटौती की जा सकती है और अमेरिका के साथ उनके द्विपक्षीय संबंध भी प्रभावित हो सकते हैं।
रिपोर्ट में यह भी दावा किया गया कि अमेरिकी दूतावासों और राजनयिक मिशनों के माध्यम से कई सरकारों को यह संदेश दिया गया कि अयातुल्ला अली खामेनेई के अंतिम संस्कार में शामिल होना अमेरिका की नजर में एक गैर-मित्रवत कदम माना जाएगा। तसनीम के अनुसार, संबंधित देशों को यह भी बताया गया कि इस निर्णय का भविष्य में अमेरिका के साथ उनके संबंधों पर नकारात्मक असर पड़ सकता है।
तसनीम ने दो अरब राजनयिकों के हवाले से दावा किया कि अमेरिकी विदेश मंत्री मार्को रुबियो ने व्यक्तिगत रूप से कम से कम पांच अरब देशों से संपर्क कर उन्हें तेहरान में आयोजित अंतिम संस्कार से दूर रहने की सलाह दी। रिपोर्ट के मुताबिक, इन बातचीतों में यह भी संकेत दिया गया कि समारोह में भागीदारी से अमेरिका के साथ द्विपक्षीय सहयोग पर प्रतिकूल प्रभाव पड़ सकता है।
रिपोर्ट में अफ्रीकी देशों को लेकर भी इसी प्रकार के दावे किए गए हैं। तसनीम के अनुसार, कई अफ्रीकी सरकारों को कथित तौर पर आगाह किया गया कि यदि उन्होंने ईरान में आयोजित अंतिम संस्कार में हिस्सा लिया तो उन्हें मिलने वाली अमेरिकी विकास सहायता में कटौती की जा सकती है।

इस बीच, तेहरान में अंतिम यात्रा में शामिल होने के लिए भारी संख्या में लोग एकत्र हुए। एसोसिएटेड प्रेस (AP) के अनुसार, लाखों शोकाकुल लोगों ने “अमेरिका मुर्दाबाद” और “इज़राइल मुर्दाबाद” के नारे लगाए तथा 28 फरवरी को हुए उस हमले का बदला लेने की मांग की, जिसमें 86 वर्षीय ईरानी सर्वोच्च नेता अयातुल्ला अली खामेनेई की मौत होने का दावा किया गया है।
