Uttar Pradesh Police Launch Massive Anti-Drunk Driving Crackdown Across State, Thousands Penalised

In a major statewide enforcement drive, the Uttar Pradesh Police, working closely with the Traffic Department, launched an intensive campaign against drunken driving over the weekend, officials confirmed.

According to a statement issued by the DGP headquarters, authorities checked nearly 69,683 vehicles during the special operation.

Action was taken against 2,654 motorists found driving under the influence of alcohol, and challans worth Rs 2.65 crore were issued during the campaign.

Apart from targeting drunk driving, officials also inspected High Security Registration Plates (HSRPs) installed on dumpers and trucks carrying construction material.

The verification was carried out on the spot to ensure compliance with transport regulations.

The statewide drive was conducted under the supervision of district nodal officers, traffic officials, and regional authorities, with active support from assistant divisional officers of the Transport Department.

Director General of Police Rajeev Krishna had directed officials to carry out the campaign extensively across highways, city roads, and other major routes on both Saturday and Sunday.

To strengthen enforcement at toll plazas, dedicated checking teams were deployed separately for every lane.

The teams were equipped with torches, reflective jackets, body-worn cameras, loud hailers, and breath analysers to ensure effective monitoring and smooth operations.

Officials said the large-scale operation covered 135 toll plazas across the state. Around 3,645 personnel from the traffic and civil police departments were deployed, including inspectors, sub-inspectors, male and female constables, as well as home guards.

Data analysis by the department revealed that drunken driving continues to be a major cause of road accidents in Uttar Pradesh.

As per official figures, 8.61 percent of total road accidents in 2023, 6.05 percent in 2024, and 3.51 percent in 2025 were linked to driving under the influence of alcohol.

Police officials also reminded motorists about the strict penalties under the law.

A person failing the breath analyser test can face a fine of Rs 10,000, imprisonment for up to six months, or both for the first offence. Repeat offenders may be fined Rs 15,000 or sentenced to up to two years in jail, or both.
