Varanasi Airport Gunfire: Two Security Screeners Injured During Licensed Pistol Check
Two security screeners were injured at Varanasi airport after a round was accidentally discharged from a passenger’s licensed pistol during weapon screening. Police are investigating.
A routine firearm inspection at Lal Bahadur Shastri International Airport in Varanasi turned into a brief security scare on Sunday morning when a round was accidentally discharged from a passenger’s licensed pistol, injuring two airport security screeners.
The incident occurred at around 9:30 am during the pre-flight procedures for an Air India passenger travelling to Mumbai.
The passenger, identified as Kamlesh Rai of Azamgarh, had arrived at the airport with his wife and had declared the licensed weapon for carriage, according to officials.
The firearm was being examined, and the ammunition was being counted as part of the required procedure when one of the rounds was unexpectedly fired.
Two AAICLAS security screeners, identified as Suman Kumari and Rohit Raj, sustained injuries in the incident.
One was struck in the leg, while the other suffered an injury to the thumb.
The injured officials were taken to New Laxmi Trauma Centre, where they received medical treatment.
Doctors later said both were in stable condition and there was no immediate threat to their lives.
Varanasi airport director Puneet Gupta said the discharge occurred while the passenger’s weapon was undergoing routine verification.
He said the two injured personnel were receiving treatment and were not in critical condition.
The matter was subsequently handed over to the local police for investigation.
Police officials said Rai was completing the prescribed formalities for carrying his licensed pistol on the flight when the firearm went off.
Investigators are also examining the circumstances under which the weapon discharged while it remained in the passenger’s possession.
Following the incident, local police reached the airport and detained Rai for questioning.
Assistant Commissioner of Police Prashant Singh said several agencies were involved in examining the circumstances surrounding the firing.
Senior police officers, including the Deputy Commissioner of Police of the Gomti Zone and the Assistant Commissioner of Police, Pindra, also visited the airport and inspected the location where the round was discharged.
Authorities have not indicated any deliberate act behind the firing.
The investigation is focused on determining how the weapon was handled during the screening process and what led to the accidental discharge.
Police said appropriate legal action would be taken after the facts of the incident and the circumstances surrounding the weapon discharge are established.

एक यात्री की लाइसेंसी पिस्टल की जांच के दौरान कारतूस चल गया, जिसकी चपेट में आकर दो सुरक्षा स्क्रीनर घायल हो गए।
घटना करीब सुबह 9:30 बजे उस समय हुई, जब आजमगढ़ निवासी कमलेश राय अपनी पत्नी के साथ मुंबई जाने वाली एयर इंडिया एक्सप्रेस की उड़ान के लिए एयरपोर्ट पहुंचे थे।
अधिकारियों के अनुसार, राय ने विमान में ले जाने के लिए अपनी लाइसेंसी पिस्टल को पहले ही घोषित किया था और इसके लिए जरूरी औपचारिकताएं पूरी की जा रही थीं।
हथियार की जांच और कारतूसों की गिनती के दौरान अचानक एक राउंड फायर हो गया। गोली लगने से AAICLAS के दो स्क्रीनर घायल हो गए।
घायलों की पहचान सुमन कुमारी और रोहित राज के रूप में हुई है। इनमें से एक के पैर में गोली लगी, जबकि पास खड़े दूसरे कर्मचारी के अंगूठे में चोट आई।
दोनों को तत्काल न्यू लक्ष्मी ट्रॉमा सेंटर ले जाया गया, जहां उनका उपचार किया गया। डॉक्टरों ने बाद में दोनों की हालत स्थिर बताई। अधिकारियों के अनुसार, दोनों की स्थिति गंभीर नहीं है।
वाराणसी एयरपोर्ट के निदेशक पुनीत गुप्ता ने बताया कि घटना हथियार की नियमित जांच के दौरान हुई।
उनके मुताबिक, यात्री के पास मौजूद हथियार के सत्यापन की प्रक्रिया के दौरान अचानक फायरिंग हो गई, जिसमें एक पुरुष और एक महिला सुरक्षा स्क्रीनर घायल हुए। दोनों का इलाज कराया जा रहा है।
घटना की सूचना मिलते ही स्थानीय पुलिस भी एयरपोर्ट पहुंची। पुलिस ने कमलेश राय को पूछताछ के लिए हिरासत में लिया है।
अधिकारियों के मुताबिक, घटना के समय पिस्टल राय के कब्जे में थी और वह विमान में हथियार ले जाने से संबंधित निर्धारित प्रक्रिया पूरी कर रहे थे।
वाराणसी के सहायक पुलिस आयुक्त प्रशांत सिंह ने बताया कि घटना की जांच में कई एजेंसियां शामिल हैं।
पुलिस यह पता लगाने में जुटी है कि स्क्रीनिंग के दौरान हथियार से गोली किन परिस्थितियों में चली और सुरक्षा जांच की प्रक्रिया के दौरान वास्तव में क्या हुआ।
घटना के बाद वरिष्ठ पुलिस अधिकारियों ने भी एयरपोर्ट का निरीक्षण किया।
गोमती जोन के पुलिस उपायुक्त और पिंडरा के सहायक पुलिस आयुक्त समेत अन्य अधिकारियों ने घटनास्थल का जायजा लिया और संबंधित अधिकारियों से जानकारी ली।
प्रारंभिक जानकारी में घटना को आकस्मिक फायरिंग बताया गया है।
हालांकि, पुलिस जांच के जरिए यह स्पष्ट किया जा रहा है कि हथियार की जांच के दौरान गोली चलने की वास्तविक वजह क्या थी और क्या निर्धारित सुरक्षा प्रक्रिया का पालन किया गया था।
पुलिस ने कहा है कि जांच में सामने आने वाले तथ्यों के आधार पर मामले में आवश्यक कानूनी कार्रवाई की जाएगी।
