IPL 2026 Final: Royal Challengers Bengaluru Retain Title as Virat Kohli’s Masterclass Sinks Gujarat Titans
Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) etched their name deeper into Indian Premier League history by successfully defending their championship, defeating Gujarat Titans by five wickets in the IPL 2026 final at the Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad.
With the victory, RCB became only the third franchise in tournament history to retain the IPL crown in consecutive seasons.
After winning the toss, RCB captain Rajat Patidar chose to field first, a decision that quickly paid dividends.
Bengaluru’s disciplined and collective bowling performance put Gujarat under pressure from the outset.
The home side suffered early setbacks as captain Shubman Gill and star batter Sai Sudharsan were dismissed during the Powerplay, preventing the Titans from building momentum.
Despite a few contributions in the middle order, Gujarat struggled to accelerate and eventually posted a modest total of 155 for the loss of wickets in their allotted 20 overs.
RCB’s bowlers maintained tight lines and lengths throughout the innings, ensuring the Titans never gained complete control.
Chasing 156 for victory, Bengaluru got off to a flying start courtesy of an aggressive opening partnership between Virat Kohli and Venkatesh Iyer.
The duo attacked from the beginning, reducing the target significantly during the Powerplay and putting RCB firmly in command of the contest.
However, the chase briefly became tense as Bengaluru lost a cluster of wickets in quick succession.
With the pressure mounting, Kohli once again showcased his class and experience.
Balancing caution with controlled aggression, he anchored the innings brilliantly while keeping the scoreboard moving.
The veteran batter reached his fastest-ever IPL half-century, bringing up the milestone in just 25 deliveries.
As wickets continued to fall around him, Kohli remained composed and guided his side towards the target with remarkable assurance.
Fittingly, Kohli sealed the victory in style, striking a six to finish unbeaten on 75.
His match-winning knock ensured that RCB crossed the finish line with two overs remaining, sparking celebrations among players and supporters alike.
The triumph was also a significant personal milestone for skipper Rajat Patidar.
He became only the third captain in IPL history to lead a team to back-to-back titles, joining the elite company of MS Dhoni and Rohit Sharma, who achieved the feat with their respective franchises.
With this victory, RCB joined an exclusive group of teams to have won multiple IPL championships.
The franchise now stands alongside Chennai Super Kings, Mumbai Indians, and Kolkata Knight Riders as one of the league’s multiple-title winners.
The IPL’s rich history began in 2008 when Rajasthan Royals captured the inaugural championship with a dramatic victory over Chennai Super Kings.
The following season saw Deccan Chargers lift the trophy after defeating RCB in the 2009 final. RCB finally ended their long wait for glory in 2025, edging past Punjab Kings by six runs in Ahmedabad to secure their maiden IPL title.
Even with RCB’s recent success, Chennai Super Kings and Mumbai Indians remain the most decorated franchises in IPL history, having won five championships each.
Chennai also holds the record for the most appearances in IPL finals, underlining its remarkable consistency over the years.
For Bengaluru, however, IPL 2026 will be remembered as the season they proved their dominance.
Led by Rajat Patidar’s calm leadership and inspired by Virat Kohli’s brilliance, RCB successfully defended their crown and further cemented their place among the tournament’s modern powerhouses.
