UP CM Yogi Adityanath Announces Renaming of Fazil Nagar to Pawagarh, Highlights Cultural Heritage and Development
Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath on Tuesday declared that Fazil Nagar in Kushinagar district will be renamed Pawagarh, a move intended to honour Jain spiritual leader Lord Mahavir and strengthen the region’s cultural and historical identity.
The decision follows a proposal submitted by the Kushinagar district administration to the Chief Minister’s Office.
The new name, Pawagarh, draws inspiration from Pawapuri in Bihar, one of the most revered pilgrimage destinations in Jainism and a place deeply associated with Lord Mahavir’s life and teachings.
Speaking at a public function in Fazil Nagar, Adityanath said the state government had approved the renaming proposal and that the town would soon be recognised by its new name.
According to him, the change reflects the area’s historical and religious significance and offers an opportunity to reconnect the region with its rich spiritual legacy.
He emphasised that associating the town with Lord Mahavir and the heritage of Pawagarh would help attract pilgrims, visitors and history enthusiasts from across India and abroad, boosting both cultural recognition and tourism potential.
The Chief Minister’s visit was part of his ongoing outreach programme across various Assembly constituencies as political parties begin preparations for the upcoming Uttar Pradesh Assembly elections.
During his address, Adityanath also spoke about law and order in the state, asserting that his administration had adopted a firm approach against criminal elements.
He remarked that individuals who failed to respond to persuasion and lawful warnings ultimately faced strict enforcement measures.
Drawing a comparison between past and present governance, the Chief Minister said Uttar Pradesh has undergone a remarkable transformation over the past decade.
He argued that the state, once associated with crime and lawlessness, is now emerging as a centre of modern industrial and defence manufacturing.
Highlighting this shift, he pointed to the production of BrahMos missiles in Uttar Pradesh, describing it as a symbol of the state’s growing contribution to national security and technological advancement.
Referring to anti-social elements, Adityanath said his government had taken decisive steps to curb criminal activities and restore public confidence.
He maintained that strong action against offenders has helped improve safety and stability across the state.
The Chief Minister further alleged that previous administrations had failed to effectively control crime, creating an environment that negatively affected traders, farmers and women.
Without naming any specific political party, he criticised the pre-2017 government, claiming it had allowed disorder and insecurity to flourish.
Concluding his remarks, Adityanath said Kushinagar is shedding its old image of underdevelopment and is steadily emerging as a symbol of a rapidly progressing Uttar Pradesh.
He noted that the district, which holds deep connections with Lord Ram’s son Kush, Lord Buddha and Lord Mahavir, has witnessed substantial growth in infrastructure, connectivity and public services over the past ten years.
