UP Energy Minister AK Sharma Opposes Contract Worker Layoffs, Orders Probe into Power Department Complaints
Uttar Pradesh Energy Minister A.K. Sharma has expressed strong displeasure over reports of contract workers being removed from their jobs in state power distribution companies.
During a review meeting with officials from various power distribution corporations on Tuesday, he directed authorities not to terminate contractual employees without valid and justified reasons.
Emphasising the importance of contractual staff in maintaining the state’s electricity network, Sharma said these workers form a vital part of the power sector’s day-to-day operations.
He noted that several complaints regarding their dismissal had reached the government and instructed officials to ensure that their interests and livelihoods are protected.
The minister also reviewed complaints submitted by public representatives regarding issues within the electricity department.
Particular attention was given to grievances originating from Siddharthnagar district, where concerns about administrative functioning were raised.
Taking the matter seriously, Sharma ordered an inquiry into allegations made against Siddharthnagar Executive Engineer Gyan Prakash.
He directed senior officials to conduct a thorough investigation and take appropriate action based on the findings of the probe.
The minister further instructed officials across the state to remain responsive to concerns raised by elected representatives and members of the public.
He stressed that complaints should never be ignored and that prompt resolution of public grievances must remain a top priority for the department.
Reviewing electricity infrastructure projects proposed under MLA development funds, Sharma urged officials to accelerate the pace of implementation.
He said all approved projects should be completed within the stipulated timeline while keeping public expectations and local development needs in mind.
The Energy Minister also sought updates from power distribution companies on the restoration of electricity services disrupted by recent storms and strong winds.
He reviewed measures taken to address consumer complaints and restore normalcy in affected areas.
Highlighting the government’s commitment to public welfare, Sharma instructed officials to ensure uninterrupted power supply across the state.
He directed departments to closely monitor damage caused to electricity infrastructure during adverse weather conditions and take immediate corrective measures wherever outages occur.
Officials were also asked to assess the impact of storms on transmission and distribution networks and ensure that repair and maintenance work is carried out swiftly to minimise inconvenience to consumers.
Meanwhile, another major issue under discussion was the controversial order regarding the collection of an additional 10 percent charge in electricity bills issued this month.
Sources indicated that a team of senior Power Corporation officials visited the Electricity Regulatory Commission on Tuesday to discuss the matter.
According to officials familiar with the discussions, the additional surcharge was the primary topic of deliberation.
The development comes after the Regulatory Commission reportedly observed that the order for the extra recovery was not in line with established regulations.
As discussions continue, there is growing speculation that the directive imposing the 10 percent additional charge may soon be withdrawn, providing relief to electricity consumers across Uttar Pradesh.
