Uttar Pradesh Government Makes Vehicle Tracking Devices Mandatory in Public Transport Vehicles to Improve Passenger Safety

Lucknow: In a major push towards safer, more transparent, and technology-driven public transportation, the Uttar Pradesh government has announced important decisions regarding the installation of Vehicle Location Tracking Devices (VLTD) in all public service vehicles registered before and after January 1, 2019.

The move is aimed at strengthening passenger security, improving monitoring systems, and making public transport operations more accountable across the state.

Officials said the latest decisions have been taken keeping in mind the convenience of commuters, vehicle owners, and transport operators.

To simplify the installation and activation process of tracking devices, the government has expanded the list of approved manufacturers, permitted modifications in older vehicle models, and revised the operational jurisdiction of certain authorized companies.

Minister of State for Transport (Independent Charge) Dayashankar Singh said the government has taken a significant policy decision regarding the fitting and activation of VLTD systems in public transport vehicles.

According to the minister, approvals have now been granted to several new manufacturers and vehicle models, while previously approved companies have also received permission to expand the scope of their authorized vehicle categories.

The minister explained that different companies and their specific device models have now been officially authorized for use across various categories of public service vehicles.

The objective, he said, is to ensure that transport operators do not face unnecessary delays or technical hurdles while complying with safety regulations.

In another important development, the government has revised an earlier order issued to Rozmarta Autotech after Hyundai withdrew its authorization letter connected to the arrangement.

As a result, Hyundai has now been removed from the approved list under that particular authorization framework.

The government has also approved three manufacturer companies as eligible vendors for vehicles that were registered before January 1, 2019.

These approvals are expected to benefit thousands of older commercial and public service vehicles that now need to comply with the updated tracking requirements.

Transport Minister Dayashankar Singh urged all public service vehicle owners to immediately contact companies authorized by their respective Original Equipment Manufacturers (OEMs) and complete the activation of VLTD devices without delay.

He stressed that timely installation and activation are essential not only for regulatory compliance but also for enhancing passenger safety and real-time monitoring of vehicles operating on roads across the state.

The state government has additionally instructed Regional Transport Officers (RTOs) and Assistant Regional Transport Officers (ARTOs) to ensure strict implementation of the directive.

Officials have been told to monitor compliance closely and make sure that transport operators follow the new regulations properly.

The installation of Vehicle Location Tracking Devices is considered a crucial step in modernizing public transport systems.

These devices allow authorities to monitor vehicle movement in real time, improve emergency response in case of accidents or crimes, and help passengers feel more secure during travel.

Officials believe the initiative will also improve transparency in transport operations and help strengthen accountability among commercial vehicle operators across Uttar Pradesh.
