Vinesh Phogat Signals Determined Comeback Despite Asian Games Trials Defeat, Sets Sights on LA Olympics
New Delhi: “I will be back.” Those were the powerful words Vinesh Phogat delivered to officials of the Wrestling Federation of India (WFI).
The moment captured the spirit of a champion who refuses to give up, even after enduring some of the most challenging chapters of her career.
Nearly two years after the heartbreak of her disqualification before the Olympic final in Paris, Vinesh returned to competitive wrestling with renewed determination during the Asian Games selection trials at Delhi’s Indira Gandhi Stadium.
Although her campaign ended with a hard-fought semi-final defeat, the image that lingered was not one of disappointment but of resilience and defiance.
There was a quiet confidence in her expression, almost as if she was sending a clear message that no obstacle would stop her pursuit of excellence.
A Gritty Return to Competitive Wrestling
The 31-year-old wrestler competed in three demanding bouts on Saturday, winning her opening two matches before falling in the semi-finals.
While she will not represent India at the upcoming Asian Games in Japan, her performance suggested that her journey in elite wrestling is far from over.
Returning to competition after becoming a mother, Vinesh displayed impressive fitness, agility, and hunger for success.
Her leaner frame and sharp attacking style reflected months of intense preparation.
Throughout the day, supporters packed the KD Jadhav Indoor Hall and cheered passionately for every move she made on the mat.
The atmosphere was charged with emotion as several refereeing decisions sparked heated debates. Vinesh challenged several calls, winning some appeals and losing others.
Her husband, former wrestler Somveer Rathi, remained by her side throughout the competition, offering unwavering support.
Wrestling Federation of India president Sanjay Singh, along with representatives from the Indian Olympic Association and Sports Authority of India, monitored proceedings and stepped in whenever tensions escalated.
Security personnel were also deployed to ensure order.
Weight Category Dispute Adds to the Drama
Even before stepping onto the mat, Vinesh faced another challenge.
After announcing her comeback, she had made it clear that her unfinished Olympic dream was the driving force behind her return.
Armed with a Supreme Court order permitting her participation in the selection trials, she arrived prepared to compete in the 53kg category.
However, on the morning of the event, WFI officials informed her that she would have to undergo a weigh-in for the 50kg division.
The federation cited a circular dated May 28, which listed her in that weight category based on her recent international appearances and participation at the Paris Olympics.
Vinesh strongly objected, stating that she had not received any official communication regarding the change.
She questioned why other wrestlers had been allowed to switch weight classes while she was being restricted.
The disagreement continued for nearly 45 minutes, creating considerable uncertainty before the competition began.
Eventually, the federation relented, allowing her to compete in the 53kg category under the permissible weight tolerance rules.
Impressive Wins Mark Her Return
Once the wrestling began, Vinesh quickly demonstrated why she remains one of India’s most accomplished wrestlers.
In her opening bout, she defeated Jyoti 7-1 with a composed and tactical performance.
After carefully studying her opponent in the early stages, she launched a series of effective attacks in the second period to secure a comfortable victory.
Her next contest against Under-23 World Champion Nishu proved far more dramatic.
Nishu started aggressively and built a commanding 5-0 lead, even coming close to securing a pinfall.
However, the period ended just in time for Vinesh to regroup. Displaying the fighting spirit that has defined her career, she staged a remarkable comeback with a four-point throw.
The match became increasingly tense as a controversial refereeing decision prompted strong protests from Vinesh’s corner.
Technical issues with the video referral system added to the confusion.
After a successful challenge, Vinesh earned additional points and eventually secured a 6-6 victory on criteria, sparking celebrations among her supporters.
Meenakshi Goyat Ends Vinesh’s Run
The semi-final against Asian Championships silver medallist Meenakshi Goyat was another high-intensity battle.
Meenakshi took an early advantage, earning a point for passivity and forcing Vinesh out of bounds twice to establish a 4-1 lead.
Vinesh fought back and narrowed the gap through a determined scramble, but despite a strong late surge, she ultimately fell short, losing 4-6.
The match featured multiple interruptions, challenges, and animated exchanges from both camps.
At one point, Vinesh even approached the officials’ table to contest decisions.
The fiercely competitive encounter highlighted the intensity and passion that characterised the entire day’s proceedings.
Meenakshi later advanced to the final but was defeated by fellow star wrestler Antim Panghal in another closely contested and controversial match.
Eyes Firmly Set on Los Angeles 2028
Following her semi-final loss, Vinesh sat quietly for a few moments, absorbing the disappointment while surrounded by supporters.
Yet her focus quickly shifted toward the future.
Rather than dwelling on defeat, she spoke about returning stronger, fitter, and better prepared.
The loss may have ended her hopes of competing at the Asian Games, but it did little to diminish her determination.
As she walked out of the arena, there was a noticeable sense of optimism. The smile on her face suggested that this comeback was only the beginning of a new chapter.
For Vinesh Phogat, the road ahead now leads toward an even bigger goal—the Los Angeles Olympics.
And judging by her performance, passion, and fighting spirit, she appears ready to embrace every challenge that lies ahead.
