West Delhi School Sexual Assault Case: Female Teacher Arrested After Child’s Statement

A female teacher from a West Delhi school has been arrested in connection with the alleged sexual assault of a three-year-old student after the child reportedly informed investigators that the teacher was present during the incident, police officials said.

Earlier in the investigation, police had taken into custody a 57-year-old caretaker working at the school. However, the accused was later granted bail by a court.

Police had sought two days of custody for the teacher to conduct further questioning, but the court approved only one day of police remand.

Investigators said the arrest was made after evidence and statements collected during the probe pointed towards possible involvement or negligence on the teacher’s part, which is now being examined closely.

The case was registered on May 1 following a complaint filed by the child’s mother.

According to the complaint, the minor was allegedly sexually assaulted during school hours by an unidentified male employee of the institution.

Based on the allegations, police registered an FIR under Section 64(1) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS), which deals with assault of a minor and carries a punishment of rigorous imprisonment in case of penetrative act for at least 10 years.

The accused was also booked under Section 6 of the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (POCSO) Act, which relates to aggravated assault against children.

As part of the investigation, the child’s statement was later recorded before a magistrate under Section 183 of the Bharatiya Nagarik Suraksha Sanhita (BNSS).

Earlier, Deputy Commissioner of Police (West) Darade Sharad Bhaskar had stated that the caretaker was arrested immediately after the complaint surfaced and was subsequently sent to judicial custody.

However, on May 7, the Dwarka court granted bail to the caretaker. In its order, the court observed that the accused had cooperated with investigators and there was no indication that he had attempted to evade the investigation or tamper with evidence.

Police officials said they are currently reviewing the bail order and have started the legal process to challenge it before the Delhi High Court.

Sources familiar with the case said the appeal would underline the seriousness of the allegations, the consistency in the child’s statements, and the fact that the minor had specifically identified the accused despite several staff members being present at the school.
