Agra-Lucknow Expressway Horror: Two Burnt Alive, 15 Injured After Sleeper Bus Rams Overturned Dumper in Firozabad

Firozabad: A horrifying accident on the Agra-Lucknow Expressway in Uttar Pradesh’s Firozabad district claimed two lives and left at least 15 passengers injured after a luxury sleeper bus crashed into an overturned dumper and caught fire in the early hours of Friday.

The terrifying blaze turned the bus into a ball of fire within moments, trapping some passengers inside as others desperately jumped through the doors and broken windows to save themselves.

The accident occurred at around 2 am in the Matsena police station area near kilometre number 46 on the expressway.

According to officials, the sleeper bus was travelling from Kanpur to Gurugram with around 40 passengers onboard.

A sand-laden dumper truck was moving ahead of the bus when the driver allegedly lost control after reportedly falling asleep at the wheel.

The dumper rammed into the divider and overturned on the road.

Before the bus driver could react, the speeding sleeper coach slammed into the overturned vehicle. The impact was devastating. Within seconds, the front portion of the bus burst into flames, triggering panic among sleeping passengers.

Screams filled the vehicle as people woke up in confusion and horror.

Passengers scrambled to escape through the main gate and shattered windows while flames spread rapidly across the bus.

In the chaos, many pushed and climbed over each other in a desperate attempt to survive.

Parents were seen trying to carry their children out to safety, while several passengers attempted to retrieve their belongings before the fire intensified.

Despite the desperate rescue attempts, the bus driver and an elderly woman sitting near the front seats were unable to escape and were burnt alive inside the vehicle.

The deceased were identified as 45-year-old Shambhu Badhai alias Shivraj, son of Ramswaroop and a resident of Kalhanpur in Kanpur Dehat, and 60-year-old Gaya Shri Sahu, wife of Kashi Sahu and a resident of Rudra Vihar Colony in Chakeri, Kanpur.

Fifteen passengers sustained burn injuries in the incident and were rushed to nearby hospitals through multiple ambulances that reached the spot along with police and rescue teams.

Four of the injured, including the cleaner of the bus, are reported to have suffered serious burn injuries and remain under treatment.

As flames engulfed the bus, the fire also spread to the dumper truck parked across the road. By the time fire brigade teams arrived and began operations, a major portion of the dumper had also been reduced to ashes.

Residents and passersby were among the first to rush to the scene and assist trapped passengers before emergency services arrived.

Police teams from Matsena, Shikohabad, and Nasirpur police stations, along with UPIDA personnel and ambulance services, launched a large-scale rescue operation.

Senior officials, including SP City Ravi Shankar Prasad, SDM Shikohabad Dr Gajendra Pal, and CO Sadar Tejas Tripathi, also reached the spot soon after the incident.

Four fire tenders battled the blaze for nearly three hours before finally bringing it under control. During this period, traffic on the Agra-Lucknow Expressway came to a complete standstill, with vehicles lined up for several kilometres.

Most passengers lost all their belongings in the fire as luggage kept inside the sleeper compartments and storage sections was destroyed.

After the fire was extinguished at around 6 am, authorities removed the charred remains of the bus and dumper from the road, allowing traffic movement to gradually resume.

Police said that at the time of the accident, most passengers were asleep and had no time to react when the collision took place.

The violent impact threw many passengers onto one another before flames erupted in the engine compartment, turning the rescue into a race against time.

Following a complaint lodged by the family members of the deceased bus driver, police have registered a case against the dumper driver.

Authorities are continuing their investigation into the exact circumstances that led to the fatal crash.
