“Iran Missile Strikes in UAE Rattle Fragile Ceasefire; US Warns of ‘Overwhelming Force’ as Tensions Escalate”

Fresh missile strikes by Iran targeting areas in the United Arab Emirates on Monday have cast a shadow over the already fragile ceasefire in the region, raising fears of a renewed and potentially wider conflict.

The situation has also caused concern for civilians caught in the crossfire, including three Indian nationals who were injured in the attacks.

Amid these developments, Chairman of the US Joint Chiefs of Staff, General Dan Caine, said American forces remain fully prepared to return to large-scale combat operations against Iran if directed to do so.

His remarks reflect the growing unease within military circles as tensions continue to simmer despite the ceasefire agreement that came into effect on April 8.

General Caine revealed that since the ceasefire began, Iran has carried out at least ten attacks targeting US forces.

However, he noted that these incidents have so far remained “below the threshold” that would trigger a full resumption of hostilities.

When pressed by reporters during a Pentagon briefing on what might constitute crossing that threshold, he responded candidly that such a determination was “above my pay grade.”

He also accused Iran of leveraging its position along the Strait of Hormuz to exert pressure on the global economy.

According to him, Tehran has effectively “weaponised the global supply chain,” attempting to hold international trade routes hostage in one of the world’s most critical maritime corridors.

Providing an overview of ongoing US military operations in the region, Caine said that American naval forces, including guided missile destroyers, are actively intercepting and neutralising threats such as fast-moving boats and one-way attack drones.

In the air, a coordinated network of more than 100 fighter jets, attack aircraft, and both manned and unmanned systems is maintaining round-the-clock surveillance and defensive coverage, supported by the 82nd Airborne Division.

Meanwhile, US Defence Secretary Pete Hegseth sought to reassure that the ceasefire itself has not collapsed.

He clarified that “Project Freedom,” an initiative launched under President Donald Trump, is a separate and temporary mission aimed specifically at safeguarding commercial shipping from Iranian aggression.

He emphasised that the United States remains focused and will not allow distractions to dilute its strategic priorities.

At the same time, Hegseth issued a stern warning to Iran, stating that any attack on commercial vessels in the Strait of Hormuz would be met with “overwhelming firepower.”

His remarks underscore the seriousness with which Washington is viewing threats to global trade and maritime security.

Despite these assurances, the latest strikes have deepened uncertainty and anxiety in the region.

The injury of civilians, including foreign nationals, is a stark reminder that, beyond geopolitical strategies and military posturing, it is ordinary lives that bear the highest cost when tensions spiral.
